Field Service Technician

The Field Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and maintaining heavy duty trucks & construction equipment in the field. Equipment includes compactors, excavators, loaders, dozers, and other heavy machinery. This position requires technical expertise, independent problem-solving, adherence to safety standards, and strong customer service when working directly with clients in field environments. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS The following duties are essential for this position and must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation: Receive and review repair orders from Dispatch or Service Advisor. Travel to field locations to perform scheduled or emergency repairs. Complete repair work as outlined on work orders efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with dealership and factory standards. Perform diagnostics, safety inspections, and preventive maintenance checks on equipment. Utilize diagnostic testing equipment, precision instruments, gauges, hand tools, portable power tools, cranes, and hoists as required. Service and repair systems including (but not limited to): fuel injection, exhaust, cooling, air conditioning, lubrication, electrical, hydraulics, pneumatics, transmissions, braking, steering, and drive trains. Conduct major engine repairs, overhauls, installations, and alignments of engines and related machinery. Road test and evaluate equipment to verify satisfactory performance post-repair. Follow all federal, state, local, and company safety policies, including hazardous waste handling and disposal. Communicate job progress to the Service Advisor and/or customer in a clear and professional manner. Coordinate with the Parts Department to identify and secure necessary parts for repairs. SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS Maintain tools, equipment, shop, and service truck in clean, organized, and safe condition. Service attachments, tools, and auxiliary systems as assigned. Complete service reports, customer documentation, and internal records in an accurate and timely manner. Attend factory-sponsored training and continuing education as required. Review and apply factory technical bulletins as appropriate. Perform other duties as assigned by management. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education Associate degree or two-year technical school diploma in Diesel/Heavy Equipment preferred. Experience Minimum of 2–3 years of diesel equipment repair experience. Heavy equipment dealership experience strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Class A CDL Demonstrated expertise in troubleshooting and repairing heavy construction equipment. Strong knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, transmissions, electrical, and fuel systems. Excellent mechanical and diagnostic skills. Strong problem-solving and independent decision-making ability. Effective communication skills (oral and written). Customer-focused with the ability to represent the company with professionalism, tact, and diplomacy. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively in high‑pressure, fast‑paced environments. Proficiency in computer systems and diagnostic software. Must hold and maintain a valid CDL and Health Card in compliance with applicable regulations. Willingness and ability to travel, including overnight stays. CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPECTATIONS As a direct representative of the company in the field, the Field Equipment Technician is expected to: Communicate professionally and respectfully with all customers, vendors, and colleagues. Provide clear, timely updates on repair progress, timelines, and any changes in scope. Deliver accurate and complete service documentation for customer review. Represent the company in a positive manner through professional appearance, conduct, and adherence to safety practices. Respond to customer needs with urgency, accuracy, and accountability. Build trust and maintain long‑term customer relationships by ensuring repairs meet or exceed expectations. WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is a physically demanding position requiring the ability to: Lift and transport parts and equipment weighing up to and/or exceeding 70 pounds as needed. Perform field repairs outdoors in variable weather conditions. Work in noisy, dusty, and exhaust‑fume environments. Operate heavy tools, equipment, and machinery safely. Travel for extended periods including overnight stays. Employees must wear company‑provided uniforms and appropriate PPE at all times.
