OAA Surgery Lab Student Worker Position Summary: Maintain the surgical laboratory facility by stocking, cleaning, organizing, and performing daily, weekly, or monthly tasks as assigned. Aid animal care, assist in research procedures involving shelter‑owned animals, and maintain accurate records in compliance with IACUC, College, and University regulations. Responsibilities Maintain the surgical laboratory facility by stocking, cleaning, and organizing equipment and supplies. Perform daily, weekly, and monthly facility tasks as assigned. Monitor and care for animals, including feeding, watering, exercising, and cleaning. Assist with the collection of blood via venipuncture and urine via expression or free collection. Administer treatments, drugs, fluids, and medications by oral, parenteral, and injectable routes. Support animal restraint, execution, and processing for research protocols. Provide husbandry duties such as feeding, watering, exercising, and cleaning of multiple species (canine, feline, rodents, avian). Assist with sample collection, preparation, execution, and processing. Enrich and acclimate animals to new environments or equipment. Maintain accurate records for all procedures and research projects, and uphold confidentiality. Communicate professionally with investigators, sponsors, and colleagues regarding workflow, time limitations, and project status. Perform routine or after‑hours checks and evaluations of animals as needed. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Current student with reliable transportation or close proximity to campus. Animal handling experience, including walking and handling large dogs up to 90 lbs. Enrolled in graduate veterinary curriculum or pre‑vet undergraduate curriculum. Experience working with multiple species of animals (canine, feline, rodents, avian). Strong communication skills and ability to maintain accurate documentation. Ability to work in a sometimes stressful environment and demonstrate critical‑thinking skills. High degree of confidentiality and discretion. Basic computer knowledge in MS Word and Excel. Physical Demands Prolonged standing, crouching, or kneeling; lifting up to 50 pounds. Sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking intermittently on hard floor surfaces. Manual dexterity sufficient for handling small, delicate equipment and large heavy objects or containers. Wearing protective gear: mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles. Potential long periods of time with arms extended. Background Investigation Offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a background investigation, including a criminal background check and verification of credentials and employment history.
