About the Role

The Company is seeking a General Counsel to serve as its first in-house legal leader. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic and practical legal guidance across a range of areas, including grantmaking, governance, regulatory compliance, and external engagement. This role is pivotal in supporting the organization's mission and will involve enterprise legal advisory, risk management, and the development of legal infrastructure. The General Counsel will also be expected to stay informed about the legal and regulatory environment affecting the philanthropic sector and to engage with outside counsel as needed. Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company should have a J.D. degree and at least 15 years of legal practice experience, with a preference for those who have worked in the non-profit or philanthropic sector. The role requires a calm and practical approach to legal complexity and risk, excellent analytical and strategic planning skills, and the ability to lead and work effectively in a cross-disciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have a personal approach grounded in humility, empathy, integrity, and curiosity, and will be committed to the values of the organization, including accountability and transparency. Strong communication, negotiation, and facilitation skills are essential, as is the ability to build and maintain relationships both within the organization and with external parties.
