Vice President, Surgical Services

POSITION SUMMARY:The position, under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, is responsible for partnering with chairs to develop strategies for and run clinical operations across multiple departments: Anesthesiology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Surgery, and Urology. In addition, this position supervises the Executive Director of Procedural Operations in the hospital, who manages operating room capital budgets, recommends block allocation changes, and staffs the OR Executive Committee for the hospital.The incumbent will help lead multidisciplinary strategic projects for the hospital as well as ensure that daily operations achieve quality improvement, fiscal accountability, and productivity and patient satisfaction goals/objectives as established by the leadership team.Position: Vice President, Surgical ServicesDepartment: AdministrationSchedule: Full TimeEssential Responsibilities/Duties:LeadershipUnder the general guidance of the COO and in alignment and collaboration with the Surgeon-in-Chief, surgical chiefs, and the Operating Room Executive Committee (OR Exec), determines the overall direction, goals, tactics, and objectives of surgical services.Works with the team to establish and achieve long range goals, and ensures the implementation of strategic business plans that are aligned with the vision, strategic plans, and goals of the institutionServes as a critical leader at BMC, leading strategic initiatives, driving performance improvement initiatives, presenting data and trends, and working to optimize volume, utilization, and year over year performance.Ensures healthy and collaborative relationships among the faculty and staffDevelops effective and clear methods of communicating with hospital and physician leaders, clinical faculty, and staff on a regular basis.Keeps current regarding trends and developments in the health care field, particularly when they pertain to strategic planning, analytic and decision support tools, financial trends, evolving technologies and programs.OperationsIn partnership with physician, nursing, and operational leadership, supports the provision of harmonious, collaborative, safe and high-quality care and the timely and efficient use of assets.Enhances the current service to develop a productive, transparent, and safe place to work for employees and high quality and efficient place for our patientsIn collaboration with the OR Executive Committee, supports the management of the OR block review and allocation process. Leads a team that:Analyzes data to understand the drivers of capacity; uses formulas and modeling to impact more efficient patient throughput.Optimizes value by encouraging use of data to drive decisions, depersonalizing processes and allowing clinical and administrative staff to actively engage in process improvement activities that reduce cost and improve revenue.Supports implementation of process improvement pilots where the goal is effective management of patient capacity.Works in concert with the chiefs of service, Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Nursing Officer to maintain the highest of quality and safety standards.Partners with clinical and administrative leaders to identify, prioritize, implement, and monitor progress of information system enhancements and upgrades, as well as new system introductions.Capital ManagementIn collaboration with hospital leadership, makes recommendations for physical space related to surgery.Takes a leadership role in planning and space allocation for all current and future surgical assets.Partners with clinical leaders and finance on all capital planning relative for the ORs.Financial ManagementEstablishes and achieves financial goals and measures, monitors, and ensures financial performance.Facilitates effective cost containment practices through monitoring of volume trends, proactive management of capacity (physical and human resource), supplies, service contracts, and professional services agreements.Oversees expense management issues; performs comparative analyses; develops and implements strategies for cost containment.Examines, analyzes, and interprets financial reports for the purpose of giving advice, preparing statements and projections, and ultimately managing resources.Partners with the COO and the departments to prepare annual hospital budgets.Human Resources ManagementCoordinates with Human Resources for the interviewing, hiring, personnel transactions (hiring, salaries, promotions, job descriptions, etc.) and implementing of institutional corrective action policy for staff.Provides direct supervision to, and is responsible for, the conduct, operations, and results of the professional and non-professional staff.Drives employee engagement. Considers opportunities to grow the abilities, skills, and support of employees within surgical services through professional development, enhanced communication vehicles, employee-focused initiatives, and otherwise.JOB REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, Healthcare management) preferred.EXPERIENCE:Work requires at least 10 years of progressively advanced financial and administrative management experience with at least 5 -7 years directly related to hospital operations at a director level or aboveKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:Demonstrated track record of management of personnel and fiscal resources Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor a multi-layered staffCapable of program development, implementation and evaluationCapable of long range program planning that involves complex decision making tasksExpert verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skillsMust be exceptionally organized to manage multiple priorities and diverse activities, to prioritize and meet deadlinesDedicated team player with the willingness and desire to learn and grow within the organizationAbility to anticipate objections and plan appropriate responses; ability to perform and lead effectively in stressful situations and to solve problems as they occurProfessional in conduct and appearanceProficient with standard software used in healthcare office setting (i.e. MS Word, Excel, web browser, etc)Compensation Range: $270K - $310K This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications.
