Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

OVERALL PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to provide routine, standardized, safe patient care for outpatients under the supervision of the medical provider(s) while promoting efficient patient flow.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Employee must

• Be present for all work shifts.

• Arrive at least 7 minutes before workshift begins.
• Remain on the job site for the entire shift.
• Work at AID Upstate's Greenville or Anderson location as needed.
• Ensure all required/requested records are in the patient chart/EHR prior to each patient encounter in an efficient and timely manner to include processing lab/test results into the patient chart/EHR.
• Room patients in a timely and efficient manner and obtain brief medical history and chief complaint from patients during rooming encounter.
• Document patient vital statistics and other encounter data in the patient chart/EHR.
• Document and reconcile all patient allergies and medications in the patient chart/EHR at each visit.
• Prepare exam rooms with appropriate instruments, supplies and equipment.
• Clean exam rooms between between each patient.
• Assist providers with examinations, procedures, and other activities related to direct patient care.
• Administer immunizations and injectable medications as prescribed by a provider.
• Draw blood and/or obtain patient body fluid specimens as ordered by a provider and prepare specimens for LabCorp pick-up.
• Arrange patient appointments for diagnostic testing/labs, consults, referrals and hospital admissions.
• Call in or e-scribe prescriptions for patients according to provider order and document appropriately in the patient's chart/EHR.
• Receive and return clinically related telephone calls–screening and forwarding those requiring provider action–and document appropriately in the patient's chart/EHR.
• Attend scheduled department staff and medical meetings.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The employee is responsible for completing medical forms, prior authorization forms, patient letter's, and other related information for insurance companies and patient employers as appropriate. The employee is responsible for assisting scheduling/front office staff with clinical information regarding scheduling and prioritizing patients, informing the provider of changes in schedule, and performing day-to-day administrative functions and general office duties including but not limited to word processing, copying, filing, faxing, answering phones and data entry. The employee must achieve and maintain proficiency within the electronic health record (EHR) system. Other responsibilities include: Monitoring and maintaining stock of medical supplies and proper functioning/cleaning of equipment; maintaining patient care equipment logs relating to quality control as appropriate; maintaining a clean work environment; and other job related tasks as deemed necessary.

The employee is responsible for adhering to both job related and legal requirements regarding licensure, certification, and assigned training. The employee must also comply with all professional standards as well as organizational policies and procedures; such policies include, but are not limited to, patient safety, confidentiality, time, attendance, and dress code. Additionally, the employee must adhere to clinic policies on safety and security and maintain restricted areas safe by safeguarding keys, keyless entry codes and computer system passwords in strict confidentiality. The employee must also adhere to both the AID Upstate Exposure Control Plan and Waste Management Protocols when working with patients, patient specimens, bodily fluids and/or surfaces or instruments soiled with patient bodily fluids. The employee must abide by strict confidentiality requirements and comply with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) on and off duty. Note: This responsibility extends beyond employee's employment period with AID Upstate.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Certified Medical Assistant license or a Registered Medical Assistant license, Basic Life Support Certification, AED Training and Bloodborne Pathogen Training. A candidate must possess problem-solving and conflict resolution skills and must be able to effectively work with diverse populations.
