Matrix Providers is hiring a Nurse Practitioner to join our team of talented professionals who provide health care services to our Military Service Members and their families in at Portsmouth, VA .
- Employment Status: Full-Time
- Compensation: This is an hourly posiition, paid bi-weekly.
- $53.68-$56.50 /hour
- $10K Sign on Bonus
- Schedule: Monday-Friday 7am-4:30pm

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine must have and meet the following:
- Master�s Degree in Nursing. Possess current certification as a Pediatric NP by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or National Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NBPNA/P).
- Provide proof of professional development through continuing education within the last twenty-four (24) months. Possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience within the preceding three (3) years as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in a clinical setting.
- Possess and maintain certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) AND Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse.
- Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years attesting to the HCW�s clinical skills. At least one (1) letter must be from a physician or nurse practitioner who has personally observed and evaluated the HCW and who can attest to the HCW�s clinical competence in the care of patients. The other letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician or nurse who has personal knowledge of the HCW�s patient care skills in a similar clinical environment. Reference letters shall attest to the HCW�s communication skills and ability to relate to patients as well as professional and other interpersonal skills among staff members and must include name, title, phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference.
Nurse Practitioner (NP) Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine Core Job Duties:
The Nurse Practitioner � Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine provides comprehensive, specialized care to pediatric patients with acute and chronic pulmonary, allergy, asthma, and cystic fibrosis conditions. The Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively with physicians, nursing staff, ancillary services, patients, and families to assess clinical needs, develop and implement treatment plans, coordinate follow-up care, provide patient and caregiver education, and support both outpatient and inpatient pediatric pulmonary services.
This position requires strong pediatric clinical assessment skills, independent clinical judgment within the Nurse Practitioner's authorized scope of practice, excellent communication skills, and the ability to coordinate interdisciplinary care for medically complex pediatric patients.
Clinical Assessment & Patient Care:
- Obtain a focused history of the patient's present illness and pertinent medical information.
- Review past medical and surgical history, immunization status, allergies, developmental status, and current medications.
- Obtain, assess, and interpret pertinent vital signs.
- Perform comprehensive and focused physical examinations.
- Order, perform when appropriate, and interpret diagnostic and ancillary testing, including laboratory and radiologic studies.
- Formulate clinical impressions and assessments based on the patient's history, physical examination, and diagnostic findings.
- Develop and initiate appropriate treatment plans within the Nurse Practitioner's scope of practice.
- Determine appropriate patient disposition and establish follow-up care.
- Perform minor surgical procedures within the authorized scope of practice.
- Collect, document, and maintain examination and clinical data in the appropriate medical record format.
- Pediatric Pulmonary Specialty Care
- Provide specialized patient care within the Pediatric Pulmonary, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and Allergy Clinics , including:
- Evaluate pediatric patients and determine the need for medical intervention.
- Develop individualized assessments and treatment plans.
- Communicate diagnoses, treatment recommendations, and follow-up plans to patients, parents, and caregivers.
- Assist in establishing comprehensive treatment plans for patients with cystic fibrosis, asthma, allergies, and other chronic pediatric pulmonary conditions.
- Assist physicians and other healthcare professionals with the assessment and management of pediatric pulmonary patients.
- Provide inpatient pulmonary coverage commensurate with the Nurse Practitioner's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and authorized scope of practice.
- Assist with inpatient allergy consultations, including drug allergy assessments, desensitization procedures, and skin testing for Aspergillus allergy when appropriate.
- Identify and address discharge planning needs for pediatric pulmonary patients.
- Coordinate appropriate follow-up with pediatric pulmonary providers and other specialty services following hospitalization.
- Assess patient and family nursing, social service, and other support needs and provide recommendations when appropriate.
- Diagnostic & Treatment Coordination
- Coordinate and ensure appropriate scheduling of diagnostic procedures and testing, which may include:
- Barium swallow studies
- Chest X-rays
- Sinus imaging
- CT scans
- Laboratory testing
- Pulmonary function testing
- Other clinically indicated diagnostic studies
- Explain diagnostic tests and treatment procedures to patients, parents, and caregivers.
- Obtain informed consent when required.
- Review new medications and changes to home treatment plans with patients and families.
- Develop and implement appropriate treatment interventions, including medication changes or additions to home therapy, such as antibiotics, when clinically appropriate and within scope of practice.
- Refer patients to their local physician, emergency department, or other appropriate level of care when necessary.
- Coordinate consultations or schedule patients for evaluation at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) when appropriate.
- Telephone Triage & Urgent Patient Management
- Respond promptly to urgent pediatric pulmonary referrals.
- Communicate with referring physicians and provide timely clinical intervention when necessary.
- Provide initial telephone coverage for parents and caregivers of cystic fibrosis patients when indicated.
- Provide backup telephone coverage for other pediatric pulmonary patients as assigned.
- Return patient and family telephone calls efficiently and within appropriate clinical timeframes.
- Assess reported symptoms and determine the appropriate clinical response or level of care.
- Clearly document telephone encounters, clinical recommendations, and treatment plans.
- Obtain appropriate physician review and/or signature when required by applicable medical, legal, or scope-of-practice requirements.
- Patient & Family Education
- Function as an Allergy/Asthma/Cystic Fibrosis Educator for patients, families, and primary caregivers.
- Responsibilities include:
- Educate patients and families regarding disease processes, treatment plans, medications, and home management.
- Contact families of newly diagnosed allergy, asthma, or cystic fibrosis patients to discuss the diagnosis, treatment plan, and education process when needed.
- Review educational materials related to cystic fibrosis, asthma, allergies, allergen avoidance, disease management, and treatment options.
- Provide written educational materials to patients and caregivers when appropriate.
- Provide support and counseling to pediatric pulmonary patients and their families.
- Reinforce treatment compliance, medication management, and home-care expectations.
- Assist physicians with patient and family education.
- Interdisciplinary Care Coordination
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, nutritionists, pulmonary function laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Initiate referrals to ancillary services when clinically appropriate.
- Facilitate coordinated interdisciplinary care for cystic fibrosis, asthma, allergy, and other chronic pulmonary patients.
- Maintain positive communication and effective working relationships across departments.
- Serve as a clinical resource for healthcare professionals and outside agencies involved in the care of pediatric pulmonary patients.
- Provide consultation and education regarding cystic fibrosis, asthma, allergies, and other chronic pediatric pulmonary diseases to healthcare professionals within the community.
- Clinical Education & Staff Development
- Participate in the education of nurses, medical students, residents, house staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Provide instruction regarding the assessment and management of pediatric patients with:
- Cystic fibrosis
- Asthma
- Allergies
- Other acute and chronic pulmonary conditions
- Assist in teaching and provide appropriate technical oversight to assigned house staff, medical students, and nursing students.
- Conduct in-service training related to cystic fibrosis, asthma, allergies, and other pediatric pulmonary topics.
- Serve as a knowledgeable clinical resource for professional nursing staff and other healthcare personnel.
- Review current medical literature and evidence-based practices to maintain and advance clinical knowledge.
- Documentation & Quality of Care
- Maintain complete, clear, concise, and timely documentation of patient encounters.
- Document assessments, treatment plans, patient education, telephone encounters, referrals, and follow-up recommendations.
- Ensure patient visits appropriately identify the care provided and required follow-up.
- Maintain clinical documentation in accordance with facility, contractual, regulatory, and professional standards.
- Promote an optimal physical environment for patients and staff with an emphasis on safety, cleanliness, infection prevention, and quality patient care.
- Clinical Data Collection & Research Support
- Up to 20% of the Nurse Practitioner's workload may consist of data collection activities .
- Responsibilities may include:
- Assist with the collection and coordination of clinical information for Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma/Allergy Clinic databases.
- Support data collection associated with approved clinical research projects.
- Ensure research-related efforts remain limited to data collection performed as part of routine clinical care.
- Maintain accurate and organized clinical information in accordance with applicable policies and requirements.

- Work Environment
The Nurse Practitioner will function as an integral member of the pediatric pulmonary healthcare team, providing services across outpatient specialty clinics and supporting inpatient pediatric pulmonary care when indicated. The position requires regular interaction with pediatric patients, parents and caregivers, physicians, nursing staff, trainees, ancillary departments, and community healthcare professionals.
