Industrial Ergonomics & Health Specialist

The Industrial Ergonomics & Health Specialist is a dedicated on-site role embedded within the manufacturing HSE team in Phoenix, AZ. This specialist owns the facility's ergonomics program end-to-end from job hazard analysis and exposure assessment through engineering control design and implementation while also supporting industrial hygiene testing, occupational health monitoring, and employee wellness initiatives. The specialist works closely with the Manufacturing HSE Manager, Industrial Engineering, and line supervisors to reduce musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risk, control occupational exposures, and build a healthier, higher-performing workforce.

Responsibilities include:

• Own and continuously improve the facility ergonomics program; maintain the ergonomic risk registry and prioritize interventions by MSD exposure severity.
• Conduct formal ergonomic assessments on all production jobs, maintenance tasks, and non-routine activities using NIOSH Lifting Equation, RULA, REBA, OWAS, and Strain Index methodologies.
• Design and specify engineering controls, workstation modifications, tooling improvements, and material handling solutions to reduce biomechanical risk at the source.
• Partner with Industrial Engineering on line balancing, job rotation schedules, and new equipment design reviews to integrate ergonomic principles at the earliest stage.
• Track all ergonomic improvement projects through the corrective action system; report MSD trends, intervention ROI, and program metrics to the HSE Manager monthly.
• Lead ergonomic training for supervisors and employees: hazard recognition, early symptom reporting, and correct use of ergonomic equipment and aids.
• Plan and execute the facility IH monitoring program: noise dosimetry, air sampling for chemical vapors, dusts, and particulates, heat stress assessment, and dermal exposure evaluations.
• Interpret sampling results against OSHA PELs, NIOSH RELs, and ACGIH TLVs; recommend and implement engineering or administrative controls when OELs are approached or exceeded.
• Manage the respiratory protection program: fit testing, cartridge selection, medical evaluation coordination, and employee training per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134.
• Maintain calibrated IH sampling equipment; manage sampling records, chain of custody documentation, and laboratory relationships.
• Coordinate with the Manufacturing HSE Manager on IH findings, exposure trends, and annual program review.
• Administer the occupational health surveillance program: coordinate medical monitoring, audiometric testing, pulmonary function testing, and any chemical-specific biological monitoring required by regulation or best practice.
• Serve as the primary liaison with the occupational health clinic; manage referrals, return-to-work coordination, and restricted duty case tracking.
• Support early intervention: triage musculoskeletal symptoms reported through the early reporting program; connect employees with appropriate medical resources before injuries escalate.
• Maintain employee health records in compliance with HIPAA, OSHA medical recordkeeping requirements (29 CFR 1910.1020), and company policy.
• Develop and deliver occupational wellness content: stretch-and-flex programs, hydration and heat illness prevention, fatigue management, and nutrition/wellness resources.
• Support the GHS/HazCom program from a health-exposure perspective: review SDS documents for health hazards, flag chemicals requiring enhanced controls or medical surveillance, and advise on substitution opportunities.
• Contribute to the chemical approval workflow: evaluate new chemical requests for occupational health risk and recommend appropriate exposure controls prior to introduction on the floor.
• Conduct and review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) with a focus on ergonomic and health exposure pathways; ensure JHAs reflect actual exposure conditions and specify effective controls.
• Participate in incident investigations involving MSD, occupational illness, or IH-related exposures; contribute root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Support routine safety inspections and audits; document ergonomic and IH findings and track them through the corrective action system.

Basic Qualifications

• 35 years of experience in industrial ergonomics and/or industrial hygiene in a manufacturing or heavy-industry environment.
• Technical engineering or science background required degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Engineering, Biomedical/Biomechanical Engineering, Kinesiology, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field.
• Proficiency in quantitative ergonomic assessment tools: NIOSH Lifting Equation, RULA, REBA, OWAS, Strain Index, and Snook Tables.
• Hands-on experience planning and conducting IH monitoring: noise dosimetry, air sampling (personal and area), heat stress measurement, and results interpretation against OSHA PELs/NIOSH RELs/ACGIH TLVs.
• Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 (respiratory protection), 1910.95 (noise), 1910.1000 (air contaminants), and 1910.1020 (medical recordkeeping).
• Familiarity with GHS labeling (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200), SDS interpretation, and chemical health hazard evaluation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate technical findings into actionable engineering recommendations for non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP), Certified Ergonomics Associate (CEA), or active pursuit of Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) credential.
• Associate Industrial Hygienist (AIH) or active pursuit of Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential candidates on a CIH pathway are strongly preferred.
• Experience with collaborative robot (cobot) and automation ergonomics: human-robot interaction risk assessment, pacing analysis, and interface design review.
• Familiarity with digital human modeling tools (Siemens Jack, 3DSSPP, or equivalent) for workstation design analysis.
• Experience supporting an ISO 45001 or OHSAS 18001 management system.
• OSHA 30-Hour General Industry card.

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $160,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This range represents our good faith estimate of the compensation for this role at the time of posting. Total compensation may also include equity in the form of stock options.
