Medical Assistant

General Duties: The Medical Assistant is responsible for checking in patients in his/her clinical or service department, performing duties that are defined in the MCHC UAP scope of practice, scheduling patient appointments, distributing medical charts to the appropriate provider or nurse, and preparing encounter forms to document service activity and billing. This position requires basic computer skills, attention to detail, and good interpersonal/communication skills.

Specific Duties

  • Works in harmony with clinic staff, patients and visitors by exhibiting a positive attitude and a commitment to MCHC's mission, vision, and values.
  • Understands organizational goals and performs job duties in a manner consistent with those goals.
  • Schedules patient appointments on the MCHC Practice Management Information System: cancels, reschedules and reviews appointments as needed.
  • Makes copies of insurance cards and other assignment/authorization forms; attach copies of all appropriate documents to the encounter form.
  • Maintains an efficient flow of medical charts and test reports; attaches reports to pulled charts, and promptly delivers the information to the appropriate medical provider or department.
  • Answers incoming telephone calls in a timely, polite and professional manner; assists callers with their needs by responding to the questions, scheduling/rescheduling appointments, and directing calls to the appropriate staff member.
  • Prepares daily activity/encounter reports; checks reports for accuracy and makes changes or corrections as necessary.
  • Actively assists with routine clinical tasks; maintains, and keeps up-to-date nursing forms, the equipment inventory and related maintenance schedules, and appropriate exam/treatment room inventory.
  • Follows established clinical protocols and performs accurate and through work-ups and check-ins of all patients.
  • Accurately and thoroughly assesses current patient status, including the patient's preventive health status, and communicates needs to the attending medical provider.
  • Performs approved laboratory testing, including the proper handling and labeling of all test specimens, as directed by MCHC policies and procedures and established CLIA guidelines.
  • Releases information contained in the medical record pursuant to state and federal law, and MCHC Policies and Procedures pertaining to the release of Protected Health Information; prepares bills for the release of such information, as specified by MCHC protocol.
  • Participates in departmental and organization-wide Performance Improvement activities.
  • Maintains patient and staff confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates acceptable professional conduct, interpersonal communication skills with patients, peers, visitors, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintains professional appearance and follows established dress code.
  • Participates in all staff educational and in-service training programs.
  • Assists in the orientation, training, and instruction of new employees.
  • Demonstrates reliability and dependability in meeting work schedules, the fulfillment of responsibilities and commitments, in daily attendance, punctuality, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Maintains awareness of new information applicable to the position's duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

The primary portion of work is in a well-lit, ventilated, and air-conditioned facility. It may require prolonged, extensive sitting/standing. Position may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and/or use of tactile information. The individual must be able to express ideas or exchange thoughts by means of talking, hearing, reading, and/or writing. The individual should have motor coordination, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, eye-hand-foot coordination. This position may include transporting objects, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

This position requires completion of high school or the equivalent (GED), completion of a Certificate Training Program in Medical Assisting Technique. One-year of prior work experience in a medical/clinical setting is preferred.

Position Supervised by:

The position will receive on-site supervision from the Director of Nursing, applicable nursing team lead, clinic administrator and/or office manager.
