School Nurse

The School Nurse is a licensed healthcare professional responsible for supporting the health and wellness of the MILTON community. The nurse provides care to students, including triage, medication administration, recordkeeping, and emergency response, while collaborating with families, staff, and community partners to support approximately 480 students (Pre-K8).

This part-time role is scheduled for approximately six (6) days per month (typically 12 days per week), based on school needs. The nurse is also required to attend Teacher Work Week (TWW) and professional development (PD) days.

Responsibilities

• Be Present: The nurse is expected to be available in the health room during regular school hours, by phone when not in the health room, and, as needed, during student-focused school events such as field trips that take place outside of school hours.
• Partner with the Other School Nurses: Work with the early elementary campus nurse and the other part-time nurse to ensure that communication is flowing, responsibilities are completed, and students are cared for.
• Support the Whole School: Each nurse serves as the point person for school health support personnel on opposite campuses when the other nurse is unavailable.
• Emergency Response: In the event of a medical emergency on one campus where a nurse is unavailable, the other nurse is expected to respond.

Healthcare & Triage

• First Response: Serve as the first responder to immediate health issues for students and staff in person or remotely.
• Clinical Assessment: Assess a student to determine the appropriate plan of care.
• Medication Administration: Provide medication to students as prescribed by a medical provider and covered per standing orders.
• Illness/Injury: Provide care to students due to injury or illness.
• Emergency Care: Administer emergency care and call 911 when necessary
• Parent Communication: Communicate with families via phone or in writing following treatment and as needed to properly support a student. Support any medication administrators (MMAs) in making phone calls to families by joining a three-way call or communicating on behalf of the MMA as appropriate.
• Coordination of Care: Coordinate care and student emergency action plans related to conditions such as diabetes, seizures, asthma, and life-threatening allergies, including the use of emergency medications.
• Preparation for Field Trips and Events: Proactively ensure that teachers and event organizers have what they need for a successful experience, including first aid kits, relevant student information, medication, etc. and be on call to respond to issues that take place during trips.
• Other Health Support: While adults in the building are not the intended audience for the school nurse, the school nurse is asked to respond to health emergencies that might occur among adults in the building.
• Collaborate with Other School Personnel: Coordinate with other school staff as needed when potential health problems are barriers to learning or symptoms of underlying medical conditions.

Administration, Compliance, and Education

• Records Management: Review, enter, and ensure accuracy of health information into the electronic health records system (August Health) consistent with best practices and legal requirements related to student health.
• Compliance: Monitor immunizations, review records for compliance to state laws and school policies, and report communicable diseases; communicate with DC DOH and enter data into DOCIS as required.
• Illness Tracking and Mitigation: Track, manage and mitigate communicable illness outbreaks through collaboration with the school's facilities and maintenance team and by providing resources to families, students, and staff about illness prevention.
• Supplies and Protocols: Ensure proper health room protocols are maintained, including sanitation, medication labeling, and locking of medications; manage the health room inventory and order needed supplies with an eye to remaining within budget.
• Delegation and Management: The School Nurse trains, advises, and delegates to Administration of Medication Trained staff (AOMs) on issues related to medication administration or first aid and CPR. The full-time nurse manages any Substitute Nurses.
• Communication: Communicate clearly, in a timely manner, and collegially with families, colleagues, and others, as needed. All school communications should be agreed upon collaboratively between both nurses.

Job Share Details

This role is shared with a 70% time nurse. The School will work with both nurses to determine a regular schedule between 7:45am and 3:45pm (4:45 on Tuesdays or 2:45 on Fridays), with this role typically working in a pattern of one day every first and third week and two days every second and fourth week.

Requirements

• Minimum Education: Licensed in DC as a Registered Nurse (RN).
• Experience: Five or more years of experience is generally sought, ideally including work in a pediatric, school, or camp setting.
• Certifications: Current certification in CPR and First Aid is required.
• Skills: Ability to practice independently with little oversight; proficiency in problem-solving; and well-developed interpersonal and communication skills. Prior experience with electronic health records systems, such as August Health, is considered a plus.
