Associate Principal Scientist, Immunology Discovery

Merck seeks an Associate Principal Scientist in Immunology Discovery to lead early-to-late stage drug discovery programs for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The role involves directing cross-functional teams, designing innovative research strategies, and advancing therapeutic candidates from discovery through clinical development in San Diego.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute drug discovery immunology project strategies across multiple programs
- Lead cross-functional teams to advance therapeutic candidates from early discovery to clinical stage
- Present program recommendations and strategic decisions to senior governance committees
- Design, execute, and interpret complex in vitro and ex vivo immunology studies independently
- Identify and implement innovative approaches and technologies to increase program efficiency and productivity
Requirements
- Ph.D. in immunology, cell biology, or related biomedical science with 5+ years experience
- Demonstrated leadership of early-to-late stage discovery programs in matrixed environments
- Strong immunology background with knowledge of immune-mediated diseases in gastroenterology, rheumatology, or dermatology
- Expertise in cell culture, flow cytometry, immunoassays, and molecular biology techniques
- Proficiency with data analysis tools including Excel, GraphPad Prism, and FlowJo
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and mentoring abilities
- Excellent communication of complex data and program strategies to diverse audiences
