Position Summary:

This position is well suited for someone who has experience building homes, framing, foundation construction, concrete work, remodeling, or other residential construction and would like to transition that practical field experience into the structural engineering industry.

The Structural Field Technician will visit construction sites, observe structural work, document existing and completed conditions, communicate with contractors and project team members, and prepare clear and accurate field observation reports. The ability to understand how buildings are constructed and effectively communicate observations is critical to this position.

Our current job opening for Structural Field Technician is a position which will focus on the construction administration phase of projects ensuring our clients are provided with superior service resulting in successful builds.

Responsibilities:

• Meet on site with clients, contractors and architects
• Perform structural field observations at residential, commercial, and light industrial construction sites.
• Type out Inspection and Observation Reports
• Communication between engineers, architects, contractors and clients as needed
• Identify construction conditions that may require review or clarification by the project engineer.
• Take detailed photographs, measurements, sketches, and field notes.
• Document construction progress and identify incomplete or potentially deficient work.
• Communicate field conditions to the project engineer and other members of the engineering team.

Field Reporting

• Prepare clear, concise, and accurate field observation reports following site visits.
• Organize photographs and provide descriptions of observed conditions.
• Complete reports in a timely manner following field visits.
• Assist engineers with documenting existing structural conditions and construction issues.

Construction & Contractor Communication

• Communicate professionally with contractors, subcontractors, homeowners, architects, engineers, and other project representatives.
• Communicate observations and concerns to the project engineer promptly.
• Develop professional relationships with contractors and construction professionals.
• Understand construction terminology and be comfortable discussing construction methods and sequencing.
• Represent MKM & Associates professionally while working on construction sites.

Required Qualifications

• Hands-on construction experience, preferably in residential or commercial construction.
• Experience with one or more of the following:

• • Foundation construction
• • Concrete construction
• • Framing
• • Structural framing
• • Remodeling or renovation
• • Structural repairs
• Ability to recognize common residential construction methods and structural components.
• Ability to read and understand construction drawings and details.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to clearly document field conditions in writing.
• Comfortable using a smartphone or tablet to take photographs and document field conditions.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently in the field and manage multiple site visits.
• Professional and respectful communication with contractors, homeowners, and other construction professionals.
• Driving to and between project sites is an essential function of this position. A valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle are required for job-related travel.
• Ability to work outdoors and safely navigate active construction sites.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of residential or commercial construction experience.
• Experience as a carpenter, framer, concrete contractor, foundation contractor, superintendent, foreman, or similar construction position.
• Experience reading structural plans.
• Experience with foundations, footing reinforcement, anchor bolts, hold-downs, shear walls, floor framing, roof framing, beams, posts, and structural connections.
• Experience identifying construction deficiencies or conditions requiring correction.
• Experience preparing construction documentation, daily reports, inspection reports, or field reports.
• Familiarity with the California Residential Code or California Building Code.
• OSHA or other construction safety training is a plus but not required.
• Experience working directly with engineers, architects, or building inspectors.

Physical & Field Requirements

This is an active field position. To perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation, the employee must be able to:

• Navigate active construction sites.

• Climb stairs and ladders as required.

• Work safely around construction equipment and materials.

• Access crawl spaces, attics, and partially completed buildings, when necessary, safe, and appropriate.

• Take measurements, photographs, sketches, and field notes.

• Stand and walk for extended periods.

• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

• Follow all applicable company and job-site safety requirements.

Education and Experience

A formal engineering degree is not required for this position.

Construction experience and the ability to accurately observe and communicate field conditions are more important for this position than a traditional engineering education.

Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time, nonexempt position with an anticipated pay range of $85,000 to $100,000 annual salary, depending on experience, qualifications, and job-related skills. Employees in this position are eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable California law.

Additional Information:

• This is a full-time, onsite position based at our Rohnert Park, CA office. The regular schedule is five days per week, with eight-hour shifts. Overtime may occasionally be required based on project needs and will be compensated in accordance with applicable California law.

• This position requires frequent local travel to project sites and may involve travel of 100+ miles in a workday.

• Company vehicles are generally available for business travel. When use of a personal vehicle is authorized for business purposes, mileage and other eligible business expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with MKM & Associates’ reimbursement policy and applicable California law.
