Job Description

Job Description

Job Title: Test Technician
Job Description

The Test Technician supports the Test & Development group by performing hands-on testing and quality assurance for prototype vehicles and components, with a focus on scissor lifts and similar heavy construction equipment. This role is research and development oriented rather than production, and involves validating new designs and design improvements for hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems under the direction of experienced test engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on testing of heavy equipment, with approximately 70% of the day focused on hydraulic and electronic systems.
  • Install and set up various types of instrumentation, including pressure ports, temperature sensors, displacement sensors, and speed sensors, as well as the Somat eDAQ data acquisition system.
  • Operate test machines in accordance with internal standard test procedures and applicable external standards, ensuring safe and compliant operation at all times.
  • Communicate and accurately record any machine issues encountered during build, setup, and testing activities.
  • Support continuous improvement activities within the Test and Development process by providing feedback and assisting with implementation of new methods or tools.
  • Perform tests on systems and components to verify proper performance, with emphasis on hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems external to the power unit.
  • Troubleshoot systems, perform basic failure analysis, and follow detailed test procedures to identify root causes and document findings.
  • Fabricate test fixtures as needed, including determining appropriate instrumentation, test sequences, and test procedures.
  • Routinely work with the EDAQ data acquisition system to collect, monitor, and review test data.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to correctly install components, instrumentation, and test setups.
  • Prepare clear and accurate test documentation, including test reports, logs, and issue tracking, using standard office software.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other technicians to prioritize tasks, share test results, and resolve technical issues.
  • Work safely at heights while operating and testing lift equipment, following all relevant safety guidelines.
Essential Skills
  • Proven mechanical aptitude and strong interest in troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Hands-on mechanical experience, which may include diesel, automotive, heavy equipment, or similar mechanical work.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose issues using modern diagnostic and testing systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical/hydraulic schematics accurately.
  • Ability to install and use test instrumentation such as pressure, temperature, displacement, and speed sensors.
  • Experience using basic test equipment and tools in a mechanical or electrical environment.
  • Ability to work with data acquisition systems or willingness to learn the Somat eDAQ platform.
  • Proficiency with MS Office or similar software for documentation, data entry, and report writing.
  • Strong written documentation skills to record test procedures, results, and issues clearly and professionally.
  • Professional demeanor and ability to work effectively in a team-based, engineering-driven environment.
  • Comfort working at heights and riding in lifts to perform tests.
  • High school diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience troubleshooting complete systems such as hydraulic pumps, cooling systems, and related subsystems.
  • Prior experience with data acquisition systems or similar testing tools and software.
  • Hands-on experience with moving equipment such as farm machinery, forklifts, heavy construction equipment, or military equipment.
  • Associate degree or trade school training in electrical technology, mechanical systems, or a related technical field.
  • Experience setting up test rigs and fixtures, including defining test sequences and procedures.
  • Electronic testing and troubleshooting experience in an industrial or equipment-testing environment.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, even though driving off site is not required.
  • Background with off-road, heavy construction, farming, or military equipment, which is often more relevant than standard automotive experience.
Work Environment

This is a long-term, day-shift role in a Test & Development environment focused on research and development rather than production. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday during daytime hours, generally around 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with some flexibility based on testing needs. Periodically, there is weekend testing on a rotation of approximately 3–4 weekends per year, usually requiring about 30 minutes onsite each day of the weekend. Most work takes place indoors in a shop and lab setting, but some testing occurs outdoors in the yard. Testing continues in a range of weather conditions, including cold and rain, so technicians must dress appropriately for the elements; however, no outside work is performed in overly cold or excessively windy conditions. The role involves frequent interaction with heavy equipment, lift platforms, hydraulic and electrical systems, and data acquisition equipment such as the Somat eDAQ system. The environment is collaborative and engineering-focused, with technicians working closely with test engineers on a variety of prototype projects, offering exposure to diverse tasks and ongoing skills development.
