Police Records Technician

JOB TITLE City of Farmington Police Records Technician – Position #117 (1 vacancy). Pay grade H (Non-Exempt). Salary: $18.7377 per hour. Working days: Monday–Thursday or Tuesday–Friday. Hours: 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. Type: Regular, Full‑Time. Location: Police Operations. APPLICATION DEADLINE Applications received through Friday, July 17, 2026. The position requires a computer literacy test; test instructions will be emailed after application. Testing must be completed by Monday, July 20, 2026. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Perform routine receptionist, clerical, secretarial, and administrative work to support law enforcement activities. Prepare computerized reports and records (accident reports, tow‑in reports, citation reports, offense reports, arrest/booking reports, reports of investigation, field interrogation reports, warrant entry & maintenance, NCIC entries and clears, evidence inventory reports, and similar reports). Research, review, and restore in‑car and lapel camera video footage. Merge police reports into the Law Enforcement Records Management System (LERMS) from mobile data terminals and an online citizen reporting system. Prepare the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) monthly submission to the FBI. Maintain the LERMS software, enter data, and generate management system reports. Become certified and operate the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) criminal data system. Query and monitor the Tracs system for paper‑less tickets and crash reports. Dispatch information to officers in the field and communicate with Dispatch Center as needed. Provide police‑related information to the public and governmental agencies via a web‑based software solution with point‑of‑sale and redaction tools. Facilitate inspections of public records in accordance with state guidelines and agency directives. Receive incoming calls, determine nature and urgency, and coordinate appropriate response. Handle lobby traffic inquiries and provide excellent customer service. Respond to officer requests for specific information and relay it back. Serve as a personal assistant to command staff, providing administrative assistance as needed. Compose correspondence, reports, and other materials requiring independent judgment of content, accuracy, and completeness. Establish and maintain records systems using moderate independent judgment, with an emphasis on self‑motivation and initiative in a fast‑paced environment. Handle evidence and property, chain‑of‑custody reports, and lift items up to 25 pounds; assist in the destruction of narcotics and firearms; obtain certification in management of property and evidence (International Association of Property and Evidence). Operate a motor vehicle to assist in departmental and city business. Maintain inventory and order departmental supplies and materials. Maintain departmental electronic records and files. Travel for certification trainings and conferences as required. NON‑ESSENTIAL DUTIES Serve as a member of various employee committees. QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED equivalent; college degree preferred. Two years of general clerical, communications, or records management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record for past three years. Pass clerical test, oral board interview, polygraph examination, and extensive background investigation. Type 40 wpm or sufficient rate with emphasis on data‑entry accuracy. Read and write English. Some knowledge of modern law‑enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Ability to learn the city’s laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors. Follow verbal and written instructions; learn the city’s geography; work under stress; meet deadlines. Operate tools and equipment listed below. Learn multiple software solutions independently with high accuracy; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and video systems, redaction software, DVD robotic printer, barcode scanner, handheld PDA, cellular device, and alarm panel devices. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Personal computer (word processing, Excel), specialized software, multi‑line phone, calculator, cash register, credit card reader, fax machine, copy machine, barcode reader and printer, handheld inventory device, DVD robotic server, surveillance cameras, redaction software, laser and inkjet printers, cellular device, alarm panels. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The job requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, and use of hands and arms; may lift and move more than 25 pounds occasionally. Vision needs include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. WORK ENVIRONMENT Open, busy office setting with typically low to moderately noisy environment.
