Code Enforcement Officer

The City of Rancho Cordova invites you to apply for the Code Enforcement Officer I/II positions. This role combines office and field responsibilities, including inspections, investigations, and community outreach to enforce municipal, state, and federal codes. The selected officer will support either the Rental Housing/Dangerous Buildings team or the General Nuisance team, ensuring safe, well‑maintained neighborhoods throughout the city. Key Responsibilities Perform field investigations and property inspections to uncover violations of nuisance, zoning, junk and debris, abandoned or inoperative vehicles, housing, and related ordinances. Issue infraction/misdemeanor citations for violations of City and state codes. Conduct investigations, photograph evidence, contact responsible parties, and follow up to ensure remedial action has been taken; maintain accurate case files. Inspect building modifications and issue appropriate notices for substandard housing violations and dangerous building conditions. Prepare written, graphic, or oral reports for elected officials, committees, or community organizations. Coordinate with other public and private agencies and City departments on cross‑agency violations. Respond to public inquiries, research, interpret, and explain policies and regulations; recommend and communicate solutions. Handle customer complaints courteously and productively, including dealing with angry or upset customers. Collaborate with homeowners, landlords, tenants, businesses, and community groups to promote strong neighborhoods through public relations, education, and enforcement activities. Coordinate inspections and dispositions of cases with various City departments. Represent the City in community and official meetings. Provide technical assistance to lower‑level staff as needed and may be required to work on‑call or after hours. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Code Enforcement Officer I Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Experience: Some experience with similar code enforcement duties is desirable. License or Certification: Possession of a California driver’s license; successful completion of PC832 within one (1) year of appointment; completion of CACEO Modules 1–3 within two (2) years of appointment; a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or CACEO certification is highly desirable. Code Enforcement Officer II Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Experience: Two (2) years as a Code Enforcement Officer I in the City of Rancho Cordova or three (3) years of related experience in another code enforcement agency. License or Certification: Possession of a California driver’s license; completion of PC832; completion of CACEO training; depending on assignment, one or more of the following may also be required: If assigned to the Rental Housing/Dangerous Buildings Team: Current ICC certification as a Residential Building Inspector (B1). If assigned to the General Nuisance Team: Current ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspection certification or current ICC Zoning Inspector certification. Onsite fitness area and additional employee perks. Physical Working Conditions Work requires mobility and manual dexterity for office and field tasks, including lifting items up to 30 pounds. The role involves long periods of sitting in an office and traveling between job sites by vehicle. Field work may involve bending, squatting, climbing, and working on uneven or slippery surfaces, and may expose employees to dust, noise, machinery, moving objects, and varying weather conditions.
