Summary Reports to Director, Specialty Pharmacy Services or Manager, Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy Services. Responsible for the coordination of specialty pharmacy programs or ambulatory clinical pharmacy programs including pharmacoeconomics, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmaceutical care, and drug information services. Collaborates with multidisciplinary care team to monitor, assess, recommend changes to, and optimize medication use in areas of therapeutic specialization. Responsible for the development of therapeutic drug policy, the implementation of corrective strategies necessary to contain drug costs, and continuous quality improvement activities of pharmacy clinical services. Participates in development and implementation of pharmacy services policies, procedures, and budgets that pertain to specialty pharmacy or ambulatory clinical practice setting. Contributes to future goals and objectives for specialty pharmacy or ambulatory clinical practice in concert with Brown University Health's strategic plan. Leads and/or coordinates clinical, regulatory, accreditation, and academic programs across affiliates and through external collaborations. Coordinates and oversees delivery of established ambulatory and specialty clinical pharmacy services as designated. Contributes to strategic planning for enhancement and expansion of clinical pharmacy services. Implements and interprets relevant pharmacy policies, procedures, and standards of practice. Reviews and analyzes services provided and develops changes to increase efficiency and level of pharmacy services. Develops, implements, and integrates patient‑focused clinical care services in collaboration with pharmacy managers and key constituents. Monitors drug and therapeutic class reviews needed to optimize drug use and maintain compliance with clinical medication use guidelines. Coaches professional staff on pharmaceutical care and pharmacoeconomic principles to enhance safe and cost‑effective medication use. Provides insight for development of pharmacy capital and operating budgets as they pertain to areas of responsibility. Ensures ambulatory clinical pharmacy services and specialty pharmacy programs support established standards of care, meet or exceed patient‑care quality standards, and consider developmental stages of patient populations served. Participates in yearly performance appraisal process for clinical team members. Maintains computerized systems, software programs, and specialized equipment and technologies utilized in drug information and evaluation processes. Coordinates medication‑use quality improvement programs and related database maintenance, including adverse‑drug‑reaction reporting, pharmacist clinical interventions, and medication‑use evaluations. Develops tools and standards to establish and improve competency levels of professional staff in areas of therapeutic specialization. Provides guidance and direction to clinical pharmacy personnel in collaboration with Manager, Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy Services and/or Director, Specialty Pharmacy Services. Oversees orientation of new employees, in‑service training, and continuing‑education programs. Provides formal lectures to pharmacists, other health professionals, and the lay public as assigned. Provides effective and timely communication of drug information to staff, management, and key stakeholders. Maintains knowledge of, and expertise in, leading edge developments in pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacoeconomic principles, and pharmaceutical care concepts. Serves as a subject‑matter expert and real‑time go‑to resource in area of specialty. Maintains current professional competence in area of specialty, including new medications, disease‑management standards, patient‑care practices, and innovative technology, through ongoing independent study and participation in professional organizations. Attends and participates in continuing‑education activities, trains, and retrains as needed. Leads relevant committees, task forces, and performance‑improvement teams as assigned. Participates in education and training of pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, nurses, physician assistants, medical students, and residents; provides didactic lectures and serves as a preceptor; provides oversight for pharmacy internship rotations and completes applicable competency and evaluation documentation. Supports department academic affiliations, serving as clinical faculty and providing lectures for colleges of pharmacy, nursing, and physician assistant programs. Conducts pharmacy practice research, clinical research, and data‑related research in alignment with Brown University Health's mission, goals, and priorities; authors original research‑based abstracts, scientific, and scholarly papers and submits them for publication and/or presentation in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Prepares papers for presentation at professional organization meetings, submits manuscripts for publication in professional journals, and author articles for publication on the Pharmacy website. Performs duties of a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, Ambulatory, and other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy. Advanced study in pharmacy or healthcare‑related field or a Master’s degree preferred. Licensure: Prior to start date, possesses current unrestricted licensure as a licensed pharmacist or as a licensed 90‑day temporary pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island. Obtains full licensure prior to expiration of 90‑day temporary pharmacist license, then maintains current unrestricted licensure as a licensed pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island. POST‑GRADUATE EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a Post‑Graduate Year 1 (PGY‑1) or 2 (PGY‑2) Residency from an accredited program in an area of specialty and board certification in area of specialty or Pharmacotherapy required. Three years of progressively more responsible post‑graduate experience, preferably gained in a similarly diverse and operationally complex health system with robust ambulatory care pharmacy services. OR Board certification in specialty or Pharmacotherapy in conjunction with five years of progressively more responsible post‑graduate experience, preferably gained in a similarly diverse and operationally complex health system with robust ambulatory care pharmacy services. TECHNOLOGY KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of area‑specific technology, including pharmacy information systems, automated dispensing technology, software, equipment, and automation. Experience with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and web browsers. SKILLS: Effective organizational and presentation skills; effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact appropriately with patients, families, colleagues, and others. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Extended periods of time spent standing and walking; requires visual and manual dexterity for computer use. Occasional travel between facilities or sites may be required. Independent Action Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to Director or Manager where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required. Supervisory Responsibility Direct supervision of 6 to 15 FTEs.
