Research Assistant 1 The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Part-Time Research Assistant 1 to work in Miami. Core Job Summary: The Research Assistant 1 contributes to research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. The Research Assistant 1 performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities. Core Responsibilities: Sets up and operates various scientific apparatus and makes minor repairs. Prepares correspondence and answers phones. Formulates and maintains bibliographies and completes applications and forms. Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents. Reviews and edits various materials for publication and prepares publication schedules. Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Department Specific Functions: Assist with ongoing NIH-funded research projects investigating the role of the gut–brain axis in opioid-associated comorbidities, including pain, neuroinflammation, and microbiome dysbiosis. Participate in laboratory techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, ELISA, tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, microbiome sample preparation, and molecular biology assays. Assist with animal studies involving mouse models of opioid exposure and pain-related behaviours under supervision and according to IACUC guidelines. Support microbiome and metabolomic studies through stool and tissue sample collection, data organization, and basic bioinformatics analysis. Perform literature reviews and assist in preparation of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts related to gut microbiome, neuroimmune interactions, and opioid research. Maintain accurate laboratory records, organise research data, and participate in weekly laboratory meetings and research discussions. Collaborate with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty investigators in a multidisciplinary research environment. Core Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent Minimum 1 year of relevant experience Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. Ability to analyse, organise and prioritise work under pressure while meeting deadlines. Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
