Position Title: Director, Strategic Funding Initiatives
Position Classification: Regular; Exempt; Full-Time; 40 hours/week
Reports to: Managing Director, Advancement Strategy and Operations
Location: Employees in this role can work from our Boston, MA office, remotely within the U.S. or a hybrid of these two options; up to 20% travel, domestic and international
Position Overview:
The Director, Strategic Funding Initiatives leads a multidisciplinary team that strengthens PIH's ability to align resource generation to the organization's priorities and growth. The Director oversees three core functions: fundraising campaigns and special initiatives, new business and program support, and integrated partnerships. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that available data, donor insights, and organizational priorities are integrated into actionable fundraising strategies that span revenue streams. The Director also leads global processes for how the Resource Generation Branch (RGB) partners with global sites to ensure strong internal partnership, strategic positioning with select donors and funding institutions, and broader capacity building. The Director serves as a key partner in implementing resource generation strategies aligned with PIH's expense budget, growth plans, and resourcing needs.
Responsibilities:
Campaigns and Special Initiatives Strategy (30%)
- Drive the design and execution of key fundraising campaigns and initiatives across all RGB teams that lead to proactive, results-focused fundraising for PIH's priority initiatives.
- Ensure alignment of campaigns and special initiatives to broader revenue goals and organizational planning in partnership with global site teams, the Finance team, technical experts, and fundraising teams.
- Oversee major activities required in fundraising campaigns-from goal setting, internal process creation, stewardship and report planning, campaign tracking systems, external content development, and internal communications.
- Ensure project-based fundraising goals are mapped to broader projections and priorities across PIH's global budget, in coordination with the Finance team and other RGB leaders.
- Translate organizational priorities into compelling funding strategies and donor-ready initiatives. Oversee the development of fundraising content that provides proactive and compelling tools for fundraising towards core budgeted projects.
- Shape top-of-the-pyramid fundraising strategies and opportunities that deliver outcomes across revenue streams.
- Define data needs and partner with the Advancement Operations and Data Analysis team to ensure the availability of insights needed to track fundraising performance and evaluate performance of campaigns and restricted fundraising initiatives.
- Ensure integration across all RGB teams, coordinating proactive and reactive fundraising approaches, and ensuring they are grounded in data-driven insights.
Business Development (20%)
- Guide and quality-assure the pursuit of complex, high-value funding opportunities, ensuring alignment with donor priorities, site capacity, and organizational strategy.
- Strengthen systems, tools, and processes that support end-to-end proposal development, pipeline management, knowledge sharing, post-award transitions, and organizational readiness and efficiency.
- Strengthen PIH's competitiveness for complex funding by facilitating alignment across global care delivery and academic sites, Resource Generation teams, and the Office of the CEO.
Process Development & Governance (20%)
- Oversee the development and continual improvement of Advancement systems and processes that enable fundraising efficiency, consistency, and clarity, including PIH's restricted funding forum, a fundraising content inventory, gift acceptance guidelines, proposal development and report standards
- Facilitate RGB's compliance of other PIH processes from Legal, Finance, and Grants Management and Compliance.
- Ensure all systems and processes are well-documented and oversee training and socialization that ensures understanding, alignment, and buy-in with processes and systems across all stakeholder groups.
- Operationalize and structure opportunities for bidirectional information sharing and program learning with PIH's care delivery and academic sites worldwide to align fundraising approaches with site priorities, capacity, and organizational strategy.
- Represent RGB in organization-wide discussions about budget and growth planning, leveraging revenue data, donor insights, and landscape analysis to inform decisions that help shape organizational prioritization with a fundraising perspective.
Integrated Partnerships Oversight (15%)
- Oversee the unit responsible for integrated partnerships management, with a portfolio of complex partners who engage with PIH philanthropically and through broader forms of partnership that supports PIH's fundraising, advocacy, communications, and influence goals.
- Ensure effective collaboration with other relationship managers across the organization to lend strategic value and time-bound support to complex partnerships and consortiums, as needed.
- Ensure partnership strategies reflect the full value of the relationships and advance PIH's overall resource generation and mission objectives.
Management (15%)
- Provide strategic guidance to fundraising teams, applying deep expertise in restricted fundraising and PIH's programs to inform donor outreach, portfolio strategy, and team-level approaches and efficiency.
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing, multidisciplinary team. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and results-oriented team culture.
- Set clear goals, expectations, and performance standards for the team, aligned with branch and organizational priorities.
- Lead the development and management of the Strategic Funding Initiatives budget.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in fundraising strategy or a related field, including leadership of complex, high-value funding initiatives.
- Direct experience mobilizing resources from both individual and institutional sources preferred.
- Familiarity with bilateral and multilateral funding institutions and complex proposal development.
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing proactive fundraising strategies across major, principal, and institutional giving.
- Experience integrating fundraising strategy with organizational planning and budgeting processes.
- Direct experience developing or managing fundraising campaigns or restricted fundraising initiatives for complex organizations preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in effectively managing and prioritizing a large number of projects simultaneously in a complex and fast-paced institution.
- Proven ability to lead and manage teams, including coaching and developing senior-level staff.
- Exceptional strategic thinking, analytical, and communication skills.
- Experience working across functions and geographies in complex, matrixed organizations
- Experience in global health, international development, or mission-driven nonprofit organizations.

Pay and Benefits
The expected starting salary range for new hires in this position is between$130,810 and $151,410 and may vary depending on multiple, individualized factors including functional experience and job-related experience.
