The Position The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is currently seeking a qualified and experienced Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team in the Healthcare Center. Highlights Location: 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, CT Schedule: Part-Time, 24 hours per week, 1st Shift, 6:45am - 3:15pm Week 1: Friday, Monday, Tuesday Week 2: Friday, Saturday, Sunday Please note: This position is eligible for weekend differential. About DVA For over 160 years, DVA has been caring for its veterans and their dependents. The Department believes in “serving those who have served.” Our services include the Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services. DVA supports Connecticut Veterans with residential and healthcare programming at our Rocky Hill campus, offering two pathways: Residential Facility: offers temporary, supportive living with programming designed to return veterans to independent community living. Healthcare Center: a state‑of‑the‑art medical facility providing long‑term care for veterans with chronic, disabling conditions requiring 24‑hour assistance. Our highly trained staff is dedicated to providing compassionate care to meet the unique needs of veteran patients, built on integrity, honor, and respect. Examples of Duties Assist doctors and nurses in general care and treatment of individuals. Measure doses and administer medications, including insulin injections. Document medications using appropriate forms. Perform narcotic counts. Check and may administer intravenous medications. Report changes in individuals to doctors. Ensure restraints are applied correctly. Transcribe doctors’ medication orders. Dispense certain medications in doctors’ absence. Apply topical medication. Take and chart temperatures, pulses, and respirations. Perform simple nursing treatments. Monitor general individual needs including personal hygiene. Report on individual conditions and behavior. Keep the unit safe and healthy. Administer enemas or suppositories. Perform Foley catheterization care. Orient individuals concerning medications and their use. May perform emergency first aid. May drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings. Perform related duties as required. Knowledge, Skill and Ability Knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care, various medications, infection control practices, nutrition and diets, medical and lab sciences. Considerable interpersonal skills, oral communication, and written skills. Ability to keep records and lead staff. Minimum Qualifications License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing, or hold a Multistate or Compact Licensed Practical Nurse license. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Experience applying Department of Public Health and CMS regulations in a long‑term care facility. Experience working with veteran population. Experience working with dementia patients. Experience documenting in electronic Health Record (eMAR). Experience deescalating and calming clients/patients. Special Requirements May be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, Public Passenger Endorsement, or Commercial Driver’s license for designated positions.
