This role focuses on sterile compounding and preparation of intravenous hazardous and non-hazardous medications in a specialized cleanroom environment. The pharmacy technician ensures safe, accurate, and compliant preparation, storage, and dispensing of medications, while supporting inventory management, investigational drug handling, and daily purchasing activities. The position offers the opportunity to work in a niche area of the pharmacy field, mixing IV drugs and chemotherapy while adhering to stringent regulatory and safety standards.

Responsibilities:

• Ensure the safe preparation and dispensing of intravenous hazardous and non-hazardous medications in accordance with applicable guidelines and standards.
• Practice correct usage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all regulatory requirements related to hazardous drug handling.
• Embrace and correctly use closed-system transfer devices (CSTDs) for the preparation of hazardous medications, including participation in evaluation processes and maintaining familiarity with regulatory standards.
• Complete comprehensive training in the storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous drugs according to employer, state, and national guidelines before preparing or handling hazardous preparations.
• Participate in verification of training effectiveness through testing of specific techniques, and maintain documented competency reassessments at least every 12 months.
• Receive training in hazardous drug exposure and spill control, including procedures for treating individuals accidentally exposed to hazardous medications and proper disposal of hazardous medications.
• Aid in CADD pump preparation after demonstrating required competency and following established protocols.
• Support investigational drug management by maintaining inventory, managing information and records, and preparing investigational products for dispensing.
• Minimize medication waste by monitoring compliance with policies and procedures, including dose rounding and optimizing drug use through schedule coordination.
• Carry out daily purchasing activities and assist with vendors, group purchasing organizations, and manufacturer contracts to ensure adequate medication supply.
• Promote inventory control strategies that minimize expired products, encourage appropriate medication turnover, and align with product-line purchasing to manage high-cost items while reducing overall stock levels.
• Use special precautions when receiving hazardous substances and ensure adherence to drug-specific shipping and handling requirements.
• Contribute to drug shortage management by supporting purchasing strategies and investigating procurement of alternative products when needed.
• Leverage information technology resources to improve quality and efficiency, including preparing reports from clinical and automation systems to support organizational, departmental, and individual decision-making.
• Evaluate and monitor equipment and storage facilities based on current standard operating protocols to ensure ongoing fidelity checks for medication storage, compounding, and delivery.
• Maintain accurate documentation related to training, competency assessments, inventory management, and investigational drug activities.
• Collaborate with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to support safe and efficient pharmacy operations in a sterile compounding environment.

Essential Skills:

• Active registration as a pharmacy technician with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy.
• Experience with sterile compounding, including preparation of intravenous medications.
• Understanding and demonstration of proper aseptic technique as outlined in USP 797 and USP 800 standards.
• Ability to compound and dispense hazardous medications in compliance with applicable guidelines (highly preferred).
• Familiarity with hazardous drug handling, storage, and disposal procedures.
• Capability to use PPE correctly and consistently when handling hazardous and non-hazardous medications.
• Knowledge of hazardous drug exposure and spill control processes, including treatment of exposed individuals and safe disposal.
• Comfort working in a hospital or similar pharmacy setting with intravenous therapy and sterile compounding activities.
• Basic proficiency with information technology systems used for clinical documentation, automation, and reporting.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for inventory control, purchasing, and record keeping.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required continuing education, including 3 hours of CE annually with at least one live credit hour approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy (ABOP) or ACPE-Technician (ACPE-T).

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

• Education and experience sufficient to meet Alabama State Board of Pharmacy registration requirements as a pharmacy technician.
• Experience in hospital pharmacy, intravenous therapy, or similar clinical pharmacy environments.
• Experience with compounding and dispensing hazardous medications is highly preferred.
• Ability to attain necessary knowledge through on-the-job training, online or publication-based learning, employer-based structured didactic programs, or accredited formal study.
• Comfort working with investigational drugs, including inventory management and record keeping.
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
• Ability to follow detailed standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines consistently.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development through continuing education and competency reassessment.

Work Environment:

The role is based in a sterile compounding cleanroom environment focused on mixing chemotherapy and other intravenous drugs. Work involves handling hazardous and non-hazardous medications under strict aseptic conditions aligned with USP 797 and USP 800, using appropriate PPE and closed-system transfer devices. The setting emphasizes safety, precision, and adherence to regulatory standards, with routine use of pharmacy information systems and automation to support compounding, inventory management, and reporting. The environment is highly specialized within the pharmacy industry, offering exposure to niche sterile compounding practices and investigational drug preparation.

Job Type & Location:

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Birmingham, AL.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
