Public Health Adviser
ONLY PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE TITLE AND THOSE THAT ARE REACHABLE ON THE CIVIL SERVICE LIST FOR PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISER, EXAM NO.5116 ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY. PROGRAM AND JOB DESCRIPTION: The mission of the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control is to prevent the spread of tuberculosis and to eliminate it as a public health problem in New York City. The goals to achieve this mission are twofold: 1) To identify all individuals with suspected or confirmed TB disease and ensure appropriate treatment; 2) ensure that individuals at high risk for progression from TB infection to TB disease are identified and treated for TB infection and do not develop TB disease. DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO: Conduct educational sessions and workshops on TB prevention, symptoms, and treatment, engages with community members to raise awareness and dispel myths about TB, as part of BTBC Core Activity of Outreach and Education. Organizes community events and campaigns to promote TB education and conducts follow-up for patients with TB testing outreach. Organizes, develops, and delivers TB education presentations to community members in diverse settings. Promote TB education and awareness to community through tabling at events and meetings. Coordinate with other organizations, health departments or clinics to promote education opportunities. Assist with updating website with clinic changes, closures, and suggested edits. Attend monthly or quarterly partnership meetings with community partners with the Partnership & Collaboration Specialist. Maintain an updated list of BTBC community partners. Inputs data for all outreach activities and events in Public Health Partners Connect database. Act as a representative for BTBC for agency work groups, external stakeholder meetings, and as a bureau liaison for collaboration between the Division of Disease Control. Facilitate and coordinate preparation for TB outreach events: supplies, printing materials and sending out invites. Contribute to a quarterly advocacy-oriented TB Coalition Newsletter for TB Coalition partners.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by twelve semester credits in health education, or in health, social or biological sciences; or 2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and six months of full-time satisfactory experience in a health promotion or disease intervention/prevention program, performing one or more of the following: interviewing, conducting field investigations, assessing health risks, making referrals, or collecting and analyzing epidemiological data; or 3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or 4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above. Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for one year of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and either twelve semester credits as described in "1" above or six months of experience as described in "2" above. Additional Requirements A. To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements listed above, at least one year of experience as a Public Health Adviser, Assignment Level I, or at least one additional year of experience as described in Qualification Requirement "2" above.
Preferred Skills
Preferred Skills: Ability to speak, read and write in another language, such as Spanish, Chinese, Bengali, Urdu, or Hindi. Experience with phlebotomy for patients in various outreach settings. Experience in outreach with various stakeholders. Experience in designing and conducting training needs assessment. Knowledge of basic data management, analysis, outreach and reporting methods. Experience in delivering lectures to diverse audiences. Excellent skills in presentation, organization, and written and oral communication. Participate in special projects as needed and perform other duties as assigned. Ability to work offsite at locations throughout the five boroughs, on weekends and/or evenings, as needed.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
