Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Clinical Services Manager, responsible for providing an array of clinical services for clients within Behavioral Health Programs. Provide assessment, person-centered planning, monitoring, and advocacy regarding the needs of individuals and families. Provide culturally appropriate clinical services to individuals, families and groups for various mental health, co-occurring disorders and age groups. Work cooperatively with professionals and paraprofessionals while utilizing local and tribal resources. Participate in cultural and community events and activities on a regular basis. All Behavioral Health staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Incorporate traditional cultural approaches in a treatment setting.
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments; coordinate, monitor, evaluate and advocate for appropriate services.
  • Maintain an active caseload of individual, family and/or group clients in order to meet assigned productivity level. Caseloads include a combination of Outpatient clients and Residential Treatment Center-RTC clients.
  • Develop appropriate person-centered treatment plan to address the client's current psychosocial, mental health and substance use issues.
  • Demonstrate the utilization of Evidenced Based Practices in the treatment of clients.
  • When working with clients admitted to RTC, participate in aftercare recommendations and continuous care planning with an emphasis in utilizing community resources in the individualized recovery plan. Monitor and evaluate client treatment progress according to measurable and date-specific goals and objectives stated in client's treatment plan.
  • Ensure the timely completion of assessments, treatment plan reviews and discharge summaries to ethically manage the beginning, middle, and end phases of therapy.
  • Provide individual, family, and group therapy.
  • Provide education and other rehabilitation information and support to families of assigned clients.
  • Demonstrate the utilization of appropriate Evidence Based Practices in the treatment of clients.
  • Provide treatment in other modalities, such as Intensive Outpatient, RTC recovery group therapy, etc., as assigned by supervisor.
  • Drop-In Groups for recovery efforts, etc., as assigned by supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with other service providers.
  • Complete documentation in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Participate as an active member of the Saginaw Chippewa Behavioral Health Crisis/On-call Team.
  • Provide crisis intervention to resolve emergency problems of client.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural identity of service populations.
  • Complete all required documentation, treatment plans, treatment plan reviews, level of care transition, and discharge summaries in a timely manner and in accordance with Behavioral Health policy and procedures.
  • Utilize available traditional and community resources in the development of individualize treatment plans; utilize materials from a variety of resources in the treatment of addictions.
  • Follow screening protocol for service eligibility for out-patient and residential treatment at Behavioral Health.
  • Demonstrate familiarity and continued knowledge of laws, regulations and trends related AOD/SUD treatment.
  • Network and build strong working relationships with referral sources and other tribal programs.
  • Attend training as required and authorized by supervisor.
  • Comply with Behavioral Health Programs and Tribal Operations mission, philosophy, and policies and procedures.
  • Participate as a member of clinical team that meets weekly in order to present cases for clinical feedback and direction.
  • Demonstrate familiarity and continued knowledge of laws, regulations and trends related to treatment for differing DSM-5-TR diagnosis.
  • Adhere to patient confidentiality and comply with clinic policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times. Demonstrate a commitment to cultural programming by learning of cultural teachings, participating in and coordinating cultural activities for clients, and by providing continuous support for the enhancement of the culture, language, and traditions.
  • The above duties and responsibilities are not an all-inclusive list but rather a general representation of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position. The duties and responsibilities will be subject to change based on organizational needs and/or deemed necessary by the supervisor.
Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
  • Contact with tribal youth, adults, families, the general public, social services, court or legal systems and other agencies and providers deemed appropriate to accomplish effective services and treatment exercising discretion and judgment.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Licensed Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services or related field.
  • Limited licensed individuals who can obtain full licensure within two years from date of hire.
  • Experience with co-occurring diagnosis and treatment.
  • Experience in working collaboratively across multiple organizations and community systems.
  • Excellent computer and communication skills.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible/adaptable schedule as meets the needs of the program and clients served.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Full Licensure is preferred.
  • Two years demonstrated mental health and co-occurring therapy experience with adults, youth, children and families.
  • Experience with Native American traditions and culture preferred.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
  • Obtain HIPAA certification within five business days from date of hire.
  • Must have a valid State of Michigan Driver's License with the proper designation required for the vehicle utilized to perform the job duties; must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver's License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of patient evaluation and plan of care procedures.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Knowledge of patient outreach services and activities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical social work or mental health counseling principles, methods, procedures, and standards.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and EMR.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the use of the DSM-5-TR in the development of treatment plans for all clients.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in conducting interviews, and individual and group therapy sessions with empathy and enthusiasm.
  • Skill in making effective decisions in emergency situations.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to build rapport quickly and effectively with clients and their families.
  • Ability to integrate training, experience, and common sense sufficient to identify potentially dangerous situations to resolve the situation with minimum injury to self or other persons.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Skills of networking techniques and knowledge of the resources of the treatment facilities, federal, state, and private programs to which a patient can be referred for treatment.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records.
  • Ability to apply mental health counseling methods and techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and workshops.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the community.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Required to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally walk and stand.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Work Environment:
  • Normal office environment.
  • High stress level as associated with the demands of crisis interventions and emergencies is encountered as a result of challenges in the behavioral health field.
  • Mandated reporting of abuse and neglect can lead to personal challenges with exposure to victims of abuse.
  • High incidence of exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Travel may be required.
