Welder / Fabricator / Structural Steel Installer

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Employment: Full-Time
Minimum Experience: 1+ year relevant welding/fabrication experience
Pay: $22–$33+/hour DOE, skill level & responsibility

WeldingAZ LLC is growing and looking to add skilled welders, fabricators and structural steel installers to our team.

We perform commercial and residential structural steel, miscellaneous metals, custom fabrication and field installation throughout Arizona. This is not repetitive production welding. Our projects change regularly, and employees will work both in the fabrication shop and in the field.

APPLICANT LEVELS & STARTING PAY

LEVEL 1 — WELDER / FABRICATION HELPER

$22–$24/hour

Minimum: 1+ year relevant experience

This level is for someone with basic welding/fabrication experience who still requires direction and training.

Must have experience with:

• MIG welding
• Reading a tape measure accurately
• Cutting and preparing steel
• Grinders, saws, drills and basic fabrication tools
• Basic fit-up
• Material handling
• Assisting with field installation
• Working safely around fabrication and construction equipment

Must be willing to learn structural fabrication, installation, layout and plan reading.

LEVEL 2 — EXPERIENCED WELDER / FABRICATOR

$24–$28/hour

Minimum: 2–4 years relevant experience

Should be able to perform normal fabrication work with limited supervision.

Expected skills:

• Strong MIG welding
• Stick welding experience
• Structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication
• Accurate layout and fit-up
• Reading shop drawings
• Working from dimensions and field measurements
• Fabricating railings, stairs, frames, gates and structural components
• Cutting, drilling, grinding and finishing
• Field welding
• Structural steel installation
• Working from lifts
• Identifying basic fabrication and installation problems

At this level, you should be able to receive a drawing and direction and complete normal fabrication work without constant supervision.

LEVEL 3 — LEAD FABRICATOR / STRUCTURAL STEEL INSTALLER

$28–$31/hour

Minimum: 4+ years relevant experience preferred

This level is for an experienced fabricator capable of handling significant portions of a project independently.

Expected skills:

• Advanced MIG and stick welding
• Structural welding
• Structural steel fabrication
• Beam and column installation
• HSS and wide-flange steel
• Base plates and connection plates
• Stairs and railings
• Reading structural plans and shop drawings
• Understanding dimensions, elevations and connection details
• Accurate layout
• Field measuring
• Structural fit-up
• Field modifications
• Rigging and erection experience
• Operating lifts and equipment
• Troubleshooting field conditions
• Helping train less-experienced employees

You should be capable of being handed drawings and a scope of work and understanding how the steel needs to be fabricated and installed.

LEVEL 4 — FOREMAN / SENIOR STRUCTURAL FABRICATOR

$31–$33+/hour

Minimum: 5–6+ years preferred with significant structural steel fabrication and field installation experience.

This is for someone who can take ownership of a project and lead a small crew.

Expected skills:

• Advanced structural fabrication
• High-quality structural welding
• Structural steel erection
• Reading structural drawings and shop drawings
• Planning fabrication and installation sequences
• Field layout and verification
• Coordinating manpower, tools, materials and equipment
• Directing a small field crew
• Coordinating with superintendents and other trades
• Identifying field conflicts before they become problems
• Maintaining production and quality
• Maintaining jobsite safety and organization
• Training less-experienced employees
• Communicating job progress and material/equipment needs
• Taking responsibility for completing installations correctly and efficiently

$33+/hour is reserved for applicants who demonstrate the ability to independently lead structural fabrication and field installation work.

REQUIRED FOR ALL APPLICANTS

• Valid driver's license
• Reliable transportation
• Dependable attendance
• Ability to work full-time
• Ability to work both shop and field positions
• Comfortable working outdoors in Arizona conditions
• Comfortable working from ladders and lifts
• Ability to safely use fabrication and construction equipment
• Willingness to travel within Arizona when projects require it
• Professional attitude on commercial jobsites
• Ability to follow company and jobsite safety requirements
• Respect for company trucks, tools and equipment
• Ability to work efficiently as part of a crew

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
• AWS welding certifications
• Commercial structural steel experience
• Forklift experience
• Boom/scissor lift experience
• Rigging experience
• Structural plan reading
• Stair and railing experience
• Field welding experience
• Structural erection experience
• Crew leadership experience

Certifications are a plus, but starting pay is based primarily on demonstrated skill, experience, productivity and responsibility.

PAY & ADVANCEMENT

Starting pay: $22–$33+/hour DOE

Years in the trade alone do not determine starting pay. Applicants may be asked to complete a welding/fabrication skills test to demonstrate their ability.
