Definition of Classification: The General Accountant provides advanced professional accounting work involving the analysis, reconciliation, maintenance, and reporting of complex financial transactions and accounts. The position is responsible for documenting cash activities, preparation and review of journal entries, account analysis, and accounting principles and professional judgement. Responsibilities include oversight of bank account reconciliations, online payment system reconciliations, and other balance sheet account reconciliations to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the University’s financial records. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this position exercises judgment and discretion in applying Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP), University policies, and regulatory requirements. This position is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of financial data, maintaining effective internal control, researching and resolving accounting issues, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives designed to strengthen financial stewardship and operational effectiveness across the University. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Prepare, analyze, and reconcile complex general ledger accounts. Research accounting discrepancies and determine appropriate accounting treatment Assist Accounting Manager with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities. Analyze financial activity and recommend corrective actions. Administer and monitor University daily banking activity, including preparation of posting journals and consistent auditable records in accordance with GAAP. Perform numerous and complex reconciliations of cash, clearing, loan, student aid, and balance sheet accounts. Apply knowledge of GAAP and University policies and procedures in the preparation and review of adjusting, recurring, and special journal entries into the University’s general ledger. Review submitted journal entries and budget adjustments for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with University policies and procedures and communicate necessary corrections to originating departments. Review and reconcile donation transaction activities from University Advancement system and prepare appropriate financial transactions, calculate gains/losses, and prepare adjustments according to GAAP and University policies and procedures. Support the Accounting Manager in accounting operations, financial reporting, and strategic initiatives.Perform other related duties and special projects, as assigned. Qualifications Guidelines: Any combination of experience/training/education equivalent to, but not limited to, the following: Required Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a closely related field. Three years progressively responsible professional accounting experience. Knowledge of GAAP. Advanced Excel and ERP financial systems experience. Preferred Five years progressively responsible professional accounting experience. Experience in higher education or not for profit accounting. Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. Physical Demands: Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; climb stairs; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds. DRIVER’S LICENSE: Certain positions require a valid driver’s license and enrollment in the DMV Government Employer Pull Notice Program to verify license status and driving record. PHYSICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: Select positions (e.g., Public Safety, Facilities, Student Affairs, Athletics, ITS) require a pre-employment physical exam, including the ability to lift 50+ lbs.
