Transportation Engineer Associate I

Job Responsibilities

Assists with reviewing and inspecting assigned contractor work to ensure projects are completed in accordance with plans and specifications. Performs inspections in specialized areas including earthwork, asphalt, concrete, and foundations. Conducts traffic control and erosion control inspections to ensure compliance with project requirements. Obtains material samples and certifications for submission to the laboratory for testing and acceptance. Reviews material sampling requirements and test results to ensure adequate samples have been obtained to accurately represent materials used during construction. Performs office work involving engineering data, including compiling quantities, preparing reports, and developing as-built construction plans. Utilizes Microsoft Office, ProjectWise, SCDOT construction forms, and other computer programs to maintain proper documentation of construction activities. Monitors contractor and department personnel staking of construction items. Inspects and verifies contractor-performed staking for accuracy and ensures any necessary corrections are made in a timely manner. Performs topographical surveys on material pits and computes quantities for payment purposes. Computes grades for bridge and roadway construction projects, including pavement grades, curb grades, pile cut-off elevations, and cut/fill calculations. Establishes benchmarks and verifies other pertinent elevations related to construction activities. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12 hour shifts.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence. The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
