About Us Inquilinos Unidos (IU) is a Los Angeles-based tenant’s rights organization with over 45 years of experience advancing safe, decent, and affordable housing for underserved tenants. We primarily serve low-income, immigrant, and Spanish-speaking communities through direct tenant services, community education, organizing, leadership development, and policy advocacy. Our work is rooted in the belief that tenants should not only understand their rights, but also have the knowledge, confidence, and collective power to exercise them. We partner with tenants, public agencies, legal service providers, and community organizations to strengthen housing stability while advancing long-term housing justice throughout Los Angeles. Position Summary The Tenant Rights Coordinator plays a key role in coordinating the day-to-day implementation of Inquilinos Unidos’ tenant rights programs while managing a complex portfolio of tenant cases and assigned properties. Working closely with tenants, the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD), community partners, and other public agencies, this position helps ensure tenants receive high-quality, timely, and culturally responsive services. This is a highly field-based position requiring regular travel throughout Los Angeles County to conduct door-to-door tenant outreach, property visits, tenant meetings, workshops, and meetings with public agencies and community partners. The ideal candidate is an organized, solutions-oriented professional with strong knowledge of California landlord-tenant law and a commitment to advancing housing justice through education, advocacy, and community empowerment. Core Responsibilities Direct Tenant Services and Case Management Manage a complex caseload involving landlord-tenant disputes, habitability issues andlandlord harassment, illegal evictions, and other housing-related concerns. Conduct tenant assessments, develop service plans, and provide ongoing follow-up through case resolution or referral. Empower tenants through a trauma-informed, client centered approach that builds knowledge, confidence, and self-advocacy while providing direct advocacy and intervention when necessary to protect tenant rights and advance cases. Property Coordination & Community Engagement Serve as the primary contact for assigned properties, coordinating communication with tenants, property owners, the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD), and community partners. Conduct regular door-to-door outreach at assigned properties to engage tenants, provide education and facilitate participation in available programs. Conduct property visits to assess housing conditions, document concerns, and monitor repair and compliance issues. Coordinate and facilitate tenant meetings at residential properties and off-site community locations to educate tenants, provide updates, encourage participation, and support collective problem-solving. Advocacy, Education & Partnerships Monitor local, state, and federal housing laws, ordinances, regulations and program updates to ensure tenants receive accurate information and advocacy reflects current legal protections. Advocate on behalf of tenants by navigating housing systems, collaborating with public agencies, and connecting tenants to legal and community resources. Plan and facilitate tenant rights workshops and educational presentations using popular education principles. Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations, legal service, and public agencies. Represent Inquilinos Unidos at meetings, trainings, coalition meetings, and community events as assigned. Program Operations & Contract Compliance Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of assigned tenant rights programs by collaborating with internal staff, community partners, and public agencies to support consistent, high-quality service delivery. Maintain accurate and timely case notes, outreach records, and program documentation using organizational databases and CRM systems. Track program activities, outreach efforts, workshops, and contract deliverables. Prepare reports, invoices, and supporting documentation required by grants and contracts. Identify opportunities to improve workflows, strengthen documentation practices, and enhance program effectiveness. Perform other duties as assigned in support of Inquilinos Unidos’ mission. Qualifications & Skills Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Policy, Urban Planning, or a related field (or equivalent combination of relevant lived and professional experience). Experience: Three or more years of experience in community organizing, housing advocacy, legal services, case management, social services, or a related field. Housing Knowledge: Strong understanding of local landlord-tenant laws, housing policies, and tenant protection programs. Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual abilities (English/Spanish) are strongly preferred. Soft Skills: High degree of empathy, conflict resolution, and the ability to work effectively with diverse and low-income communities. Other Requirements: Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of automobile insurance. Working Conditions This position requires regular travel throughout Los Angeles County and frequent field work, including walking properties, climbing stairs, conducting door-to-door outreach, facilitating tenant meetings, attending workshops, and participating in evening and occasional weekend meetings or community events.
