General Manager — Retail Counter & Catering
Iconic Upper East Side gourmet food shop seeks a highly motivated, service-oriented General Manager to oversee our retail area, prepared foods counter, and catering program. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a food and management background — ideally a candidate with prepared foods counter experience and a catering background, including platter assembly. This role is also a great fit for someone who previously worked in a kitchen as a chef and is looking to transition into daytime hours while staying connected to food and hospitality. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing and training approximately 20 employees across both front-of-house and back-of-house teams, with a strong hands-on presence at the prepared foods counter — including slicing, portioning, and packing product, operating a deli slicer, and running a POS system for daily transactions. Comfort and confidence behind the counter is essential, as this role requires actively working the counter alongside the team, not just overseeing it. In addition to strong management skills, the candidate must be willing to be a hands-on part of the team.
Exceptional customer service is essential — this person will serve as the "face of the business" and is expected to work confidently with a high-end, discerning clientele. Candidates must be comfortable handling phone orders and taking catering orders by phone, and must be reliable and dependable.

Responsibilities include:
- Supervising the counter and kitchen, including staff scheduling
- Managing day-to-day counter operations — slicing, portioning, packing, and maintaining product presentation
- Operating a deli slicer and POS system with accuracy and efficiency
- Managing counter service and customer relations
- Developing catering offerings, creating platters, and orchestrating holiday catering
- Assembling gift baskets
- Maintaining the look of the store and overseeing merchandising
- Ensuring health department readiness at all times
