Job Title: Material Handler Job Description

The Material Handler safely operates stand-up and sit-down forklifts to move, organize, and rotate materials in a food manufacturing warehouse, ensuring accurate, first-in-first-out (FIFO) inventory movement. This role uses computer systems, RF scanners, and basic office software to manage orders and shipments, while following strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), quality, and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Operate stand-up and sit-down forklift trucks to organize materials in the warehouse and allergen rack in a safe and efficient manner.

• Rotate all stock to ensure first-in-first-out (FIFO) material movement and usage.

• Use computers and tablets to print shipments and orders using the Mapics / SAP system.

• Use Excel to create shipment and order placards and Outlook to email information and maintain clear communication.

• Read and follow customer order requirements as shown on printed picklists, verifying items, lot numbers, and quantities for accuracy.

• Use RF scanners to pick and allocate shipments according to proper FIFO procedures.

• Build pallets to proper industry standards and stretch wrap them according to best practices to ensure products arrive without damage.

• Report any inventory variances discovered during picking to the lead or supervisor and support resolution through cycle counts.

• Follow trailer loading checklists and procedures when loading trailers, and double-check orders for accuracy before shipment.

• Assist with warehouse sanitation and organization in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

• Support all areas of the warehouse, including shipping and receiving, general warehouse activities, and materials-related projects.

• Adhere to all safety rules and promptly communicate any issues or concerns that cannot be resolved within the crew or by supervisors.

• Participate actively in Quality and Safety Programs.

• Perform other related duties as assigned, including inventory, picking, and packing tasks.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Six months to one year of related experience and/or training in a warehouse or similar environment.

• One year of experience operating both sit-down and stand-up forklift trucks.

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, bills of lading, and other shipping documents.

• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence clearly and accurately.

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

• Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

• Ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

• Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience using Mapics / SAP or similar warehouse management or ERP systems.

• Experience using RF scanners for inventory picking and allocation.

• Familiarity with Microsoft Excel for creating shipment and order placards.

• Experience using Outlook or similar email tools for communication.

• Prior experience in a food manufacturing or GMP-regulated environment.

• Comfort working in a structured environment with standardized procedures and checklists.

Work Environment

This position operates on 2nd shift, Monday through Thursday, from 2:00 p.m. to 12:20 a.m. The role is based in a food manufacturing facility that follows strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). The site includes 8 production rooms and 4 packaging lines. Team members must follow all hygiene and sanitation protocols, including washing up before entering the production floor, sanitizing boots, and washing and sanitizing hands before entering each room. The dress code requires wearing a uniform, hair net, beard net (as applicable), and safety shoes at all times in designated areas. The work involves frequent lifting and movement of materials and regular use of forklifts and warehouse equipment in a structured, safety-focused environment.

This is a Contract position based out of Elk Grove Village, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.50 - $20.50/hr.
