Job Description The RN Preceptor is responsible for orienting, training, and mentoring new and existing Registered Nurses during the onboarding process. The Preceptor acts as a liaison to ensure effective communication between nursing staff, management, and the director. Essential Functions Willingness and desire to assist in the orientation of new hires Oversees the clinical orientation of new hires during orientation period Acts as a role model to assist the orientee to socialize in the workplace, learn and develop clinical practice, shape critical thinking and judgment skills, and supervise to ensure patient safety Proficient in drug storage cabinet processes and able to train others Skilled at mixing chemotherapy and therapeutic medications and able to train the process to the orientee ensuring best practice Works with the clinician to review documentation processes and forms for patient visits Monitors the orientation checklist so outcomes are met within the appropriate time frame Communicates with management regarding new hire progress Collaborates with manager in 45‑day and 90‑day evaluation Provides expertise in clinical skills and knowledge and is able to provide rationale for tasks performed Follows all clinical policies and procedures ensuring best practice Collaborates with the training team on assessed education needs to develop an organized, proficient, and quality‑focused education program Works in collaboration with all departments to ensure organizational goals are met Selects and uses training/instructional methods appropriate for when learning or teaching new processes After orientation, available as a resource mentor for the employee Identifies measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance relative to system goals Conducts job‑specific application training at least once per quarter Preceptor will train in the new employee’s clinic within their region; work at the home clinic when not orienting a new employee and help with special projects if time and staffing permit Participates with new version functionality testing of potentially all applications (EMR, Healthstream, etc.) Supports end users with defining and resolving issues with the new versions Maintains the highest standards of professional conduct in relation to confidential information Supports and adheres to Tennessee Oncology mission, vision, and values Must meet all essential functions of the clinical staff position job description precepting Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Positive role model clinician with excellent customer service skills Effective interpersonal and communication skills Teaching and leadership skills with ability to provide effective feedback Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude Ability to monitor/assess performance and recommend improvement in workflow, processes, and procedures Demonstrates excellent critical thinking skills Ability to modify strategies for different learning styles and offer alternative approaches in the education process Adapts to new and changing environments, supports innovation and change Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships Proficient in Microsoft Office Education & Experience Must complete the Tennessee Oncology Preceptor Training Class – required No less than one year experience in the clinical area as a Tennessee Oncology RN Associate Degree in Nursing; Preferred BSN OCN preferred; Current Tennessee License; unrestricted Current CPR certification required Familiarity with quality and regulatory matters Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification required Able to travel to satellite clinic when necessary Physical Requirements Standing, walking, sitting, manual dexterity, repetitive finger motion, lifting or exerting force up to 25 pounds, reaching or stretching, climbing or balancing, speaking, hearing, and seeing (with correction) – as detailed in the original text.
