About the Department

The Office of Commercialization (OOC) at the University of Cincinnati, headquartered in the 1819 Innovation Hub, helps transform cutting-edge university research into products, services, companies, and other solutions that create real-world impact. The OOC leads the identification, protection, development, transfer, and commercialization of innovations arising across UC’s research enterprise.

The office manages a vast intellectual property portfolio, develops commercialization strategies, and works with researchers, patent counsel, industry partners, entrepreneurs, and other external organizations to move promising innovations toward the marketplace. Through this work, the OOC helps UC researchers maximize the societal and economic impact of their discoveries while supporting advances in health, technology, sustainability, and regional economic development.

Job Overview

The Office of Commercialization is seeking a Technology Transfer Compliance Associate to join its Commercialization Compliance team. This position is well suited for a paralegal or other professional with experience or interest in intellectual property, patent prosecution, docketing, and portfolio management who wants to apply those skills in a university research and technology-transfer environment.

The Technology Transfer Compliance Associate will serve as the primary paralegal support for UC’s in-house patent counsel and provide intellectual property portfolio support to the broader Commercialization team. Responsibilities will include coordinating patent drafting and prosecution activities; monitoring, communicating, and helping manage patent filing and prosecution deadlines; assisting with patent filings and related documentation; maintaining accurate intellectual property and patent records; coordinating with inventors, internal team members, and outside patent counsel; managing the review and approval process for patent annuities and maintenance fees; and supporting intellectual property-related compliance requirements.

The position will work with a broad range of technologies and research discoveries and will play an important role in ensuring that UC’s intellectual property portfolio is accurately maintained, deadlines are met, and patent activities are coordinated effectively across the university and with outside counsel.

Essential Functions

• Track patent/legal expenses and license income.
• Monitor and/or review agreements to ensure contractual financial and performance compliance.
• Issue invoices for patent/legal expenses and license income.
• Distribute royalty income to partners, inventors, departments and colleges.
• Review and track invention disclosures for reporting requirements to funders, including Federal research sponsors.
• Track reporting requirements to funders, including Federal research sponsors.
• Report inventions, patent filings and license income as required by funders, including Federal research sponsors.
• Maintain informational databases to meet any office needs including License and Invention Reporting Compliance.
• Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

• Associate's Degree.
• Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

One (1) year of related experience.

Salary/Hourly Pay Rate Information: $47,800 - $54,636 annually dependent on candidate experience.
