The Quality Technician supports continuous quality improvement, process control, and the launch of new product production by working closely with the Quality Engineer and Quality Manager. This role focuses on performing First Article Inspections (FAI), generating and managing nonconformance and material discrepancy reports (NCR/MDR), executing Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) activities, overseeing precision measurement equipment, supporting document control, and maintaining the Quality Management System (QMS).

Responsibilities

• Monitor and audit manufacturing operations and processes to ensure compliance with established quality standards and customer requirements.

• Assist in implementing, maintaining, and improving the Quality Management System, including document control and quality procedures.

• Investigate nonconforming products and quality issues, apply structured problem-solving methodologies to determine root cause, and support the implementation of effective corrective actions.

• Generate, track, and maintain material discrepancy reports (MDRs), and follow up to ensure timely and complete MDR resolution.

• Collaborate with the Quality Engineer to prepare and submit PPAP documentation to customers, including Control Plans, Initial Sample Inspection Reports (ISIR), material and steel certifications, PFMEA, process flow charts, and part submission warrants.

• Collect and verify certifications from vendors and external service providers, such as steel suppliers, heat treaters, and platers, to ensure compliance with specifications.

• Assist with Continuous Improvement projects as requested, contributing quality-related data and insights to enhance processes and products.

• Perform audits and inspections of production parts, including detailed First Article Inspections (FAI), to confirm conformance to drawings and specifications.

• Coordinate and deploy training materials related to quality standards, inspection practices, and good manufacturing practices, and support training activities in production areas.

• Promptly alert department leads and management to conditions or situations that may negatively impact safety, product quality, or productivity.

• Assist the Quality Engineer and Quality Manager in the disposition of nonconforming products, including rework, scrap, or return-to-vendor decisions.

• Provide backup support for receiving inspection and final inspection, and fill in for other roles within the Quality Control department as needed.

• Maintain accurate records, reports, inspection data, forms, and corrective action documentation to support traceability and compliance.

• Perform Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gauge R&R) studies and capability studies to validate measurement systems and process performance.

• Oversee and maintain precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other inspection tools, ensuring proper use and care.

• Utilize machining knowledge and CMM operation at a basic level to support inspections and verification of complex parts.

• Apply strong blueprint reading skills to interpret engineering drawings, understand engineering concepts, and verify product characteristics against customer specifications.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in quality inspection or quality engineering within a professional manufacturing environment.

• Demonstrated experience performing First Article Inspections (FAI) and production part audits.

• Ability to generate, track, and maintain nonconformance reports and material discrepancy reports (NCR/MDR).

• Experience supporting PPAP activities, including preparation of Control Plans, ISIR, PFMEA, flow charts, and part submission warrants.

• Strong blueprint reading skills with the ability to interpret engineering drawings and comprehend customer specifications and engineering concepts.

• Proficiency in using precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, optical comparators, dial bore gauges, and dial indicators.

• Basic knowledge of Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) operation to support inspection tasks.

• Ability to perform Gauge R&R and capability studies to evaluate measurement systems and process capability.

• Experience working within a Quality Management System (QMS), including maintaining documentation and supporting audits.

• Strong attention to detail, accuracy in recordkeeping, and ability to maintain organized inspection data and reports.

• Effective communication skills to coordinate with engineers, production personnel, and management regarding quality issues and training.

• Ability to recognize and promptly escalate conditions that may impact safety, quality, or productivity.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Machining experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus and supports effective inspection and understanding of production processes.

• Experience in a machine shop or similar production setting with exposure to moderate-to-loud noise and active manufacturing operations.

• Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and participation in improvement projects.

• Capability to coordinate and deploy training materials related to quality standards and good manufacturing practices.

• Comfort working with vendors and external service providers to obtain and verify material and process certifications.

Work Environment

This role is based in a machine shop environment with moderate-to-loud noise and active manufacturing equipment. The position requires the ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance, as well as frequent reaching, bending, and standing for extended periods. The standard schedule is Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., consisting of four 10-hour workdays. The work involves regular use of precision measuring instruments and inspection equipment in a production and quality control setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Racine, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
