POLICE OFFICER

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: POLICE OFFICER Protect life and property, respond to public needs, deter crime, enforce County statutes, ordinances, laws, and regulations of state and federal government, and perform investigations, special details, and specific assignments within an assigned unit. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Enforce all County, state, and federal codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security. Maintain visibility by patrolling assigned area, County streets, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses; observe prowlers, suspicious persons, and violators. Perform surveillance of locations and suspects; collect and review data; develop trends and patterns; file intelligence reports. Investigate reported crimes; interview and obtain statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; gather, prepare, and submit evidence to crime lab. Obtain warrants; perform search operations; locate missing persons. Determine probable cause for search and reasonable suspicion for detainment; pursue fleeing and subdue resisting suspects; effect arrests; process and transport prisoners. Respond to emergency calls, assist or back fellow officers, execute warrants, serve subpoenas, make traffic stops; mediate disputes; advise suspects of rights. Respond to accident calls; gather information; investigate and reconstruct serious or fatal accidents; interview victims and witnesses; investigate hit-and-run incidents; notify relatives of victims. Perform functions at accidents, emergencies, fires, and disasters: direct traffic, administer first aid, manage hazardous situations, interact with EMT teams. Establish road blocks; stop vehicles for traffic violations; issue traffic citations and warnings; administer field sobriety tests; identify wanted persons/vehicles; impound vehicles; assist stranded motorists; clear roadways of obstacles. Identify illegal drugs and hazardous materials. Enter/retrieve data in computer systems for stolen property, arrest, wanted persons, investigation data, and criminal/driving records checks; review crime statistics. Assist with interdepartmental duties and County activities, including school zones, traffic direction, animal control, security at social events, special escorts, crowd/riot control, and other assignments. Document case information; assist prosecution of offenders; appear in court to present evidence and testimony. Respond to requests for information by phone or in person from merchants, community organizations, the general public, employees, superiors, and others; attend community meetings; assist with community programs and crime prevention. Contact command/supervisory personnel for emergency response and critical incident communications; exchange information with dispatchers, attorneys, court personnel, medical examiner, medical professionals, and other agencies. Maintain current field and code manuals, policies, handbooks, maps, and related material. Attend shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions to maintain knowledge of operations, policies, procedures, codes, and laws. Complete forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and documents; maintain administrative records and files. Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and representatives. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS May perform special operations, investigations, and team activities such as SWAT, dive team/water recovery, aviation/air support, traffic, DUI Task Force, negotiations, juvenile, vice, homicide, burglary, robbery, type thefts and abuse, narcotics, evidence/property control, field training, animal control, canine handler/trainer, training, teaching, and other duties. Maintain cleanliness of vehicle; request service/repairs; maintain weapons and equipment in functional condition. Answer telephone; provide information, advice, guidance; relay messages; return calls. Substitute for co-workers in temporary absence; perform other administrative tasks. Perform other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED. Valid Georgia driver's license. Current Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Qualified to operate a firearm. May be required to attain and maintain additional certifications specific to assigned unit. ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability Tasks require heavy physical effort; climbing and balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of up to 160 lbs, occasionally heavier. May require lifting a human, pushing a vehicle, or sustained combat. Sensory Requirements Ability to perceive and discriminate colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, visual cues or signals; ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors Exposure to adverse conditions: dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
