Job Description - Traffic Systems Technician I or II (2602120) Job Description Traffic Systems Technician I or II - (2602120) Position Information TxDOT is seeking a motivated Traffic Systems Technician I or II to join our Traffic Systems Maintenance Office located at 6810 Old Katy Road in Houston, Texas. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start and build a long‑term career in traffic operations while serving the traveling public. In this role, you will work as part of a hands‑on team responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting traffic signals, roadway illumination, and related traffic systems throughout the Houston District. These systems play a critical role in keeping roadways safe and operating efficiently for the millions of people who travel them every day. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, solving problems, and learning technical skills. No prior experience is required for entry‑level candidates. TxDOT will provide training on equipment, systems, procedures, and safety practices, giving you the tools and knowledge needed to succeed and grow within the organization. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with government and private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor. Performs routine work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance and programming of traffic systems, communication, illumination and data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with government and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and assists in developing recommendations for long‑term solutions. Assists in working with other government and private entities concerning utilities and rights‑of‑way. Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Includes all essential duties listed for Traffic Systems Tech I as well as: Attends meetings with Area Engineers and contractors to resolve problems and implement solutions. Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics. Inspects construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, maintain and repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements. Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned Minimum Qualifications Education High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience No experience required Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Experience 1 year Construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Some knowledge of: Electrical construction procedures Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Follow verbal and written instructions Work with electricity up to 600 volts Includes all competencies listed for Traffic Systems Technician I as well as: Considerable knowledge of: Industry guidelines, specifications and codes in the production and use of technical plans for the development and delivery of products and services Traffic engineering terminology and fundamentals Electrical construction procedures Some knowledge of: Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Writing, reviewing and revising documents to include engineering notes, specifications, standards and procedures Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Traffic Systems Technician I and II Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s) Standing-prolonged periods of time Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
