Fire Protection Engineer PE Location: Hunt Valley, MD Job Type: Full‑Time/Regular Position Summary Clark Nexsen, a JMT Company, seeks a Fire Protection Engineer to provide technical leadership and execution on multi‑discipline building design projects for commercial and government facilities, as well as single‑discipline fire protection projects. Compensation: $48‑52 per hour, commensurate with experience, education, and certifications. Responsibilities Perform all aspects of fire protection design services, including conceptual studies, programming, schematic, development, and construction documents under the supervision of a Senior Fire Protection Engineer or Department Director. Collaborate within a multi‑discipline design team. Meet with clients to clarify scope of work and prepare marketing and presentation materials. Seek guidance from senior staff as needed to resolve technical and coordination issues. Direct and supervise support staff, especially when encountering unusual or difficult problems. Prepare bidding documents, addenda, amendments, and perform bid tabulation. Handle construction‑phase tasks such as field visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings. Comply with company quality control practices and procedures. Respond to direction from the Department Director, Managing Principals, Project Managers, Design Managers, Operations Directors, and senior management. Coordinate with architects, engineers, interior designers, and landscape architects. Participate in team meetings and coordinate efforts with other team members. Direct, supervise, and train junior fire protection staff. Mentor and monitor the professional development of junior staff. Project Responsibilities Execute Senior Fire Protection Engineer tasks as directed. Serve as Design Manager on assigned projects. Prepare scope and fee proposals for multi‑discipline or single‑discipline fire protection projects. Conduct project code analysis for review by senior staff. Select and layout fire protection systems, considering alternative designs. Prepare accurate, complete, and code‑compliant drawings and specifications for schematic, design development, and construction documents. Develop details of building system components. Review calculations and work products from fire protection EITs, graduates, designers, and CADD technicians. Develop discipline specifications for review. Coordinate drawings with technical specifications and other disciplines. Incorporate QC and Gray Team comments into project documents. Assist with responding to RFIs and other project comments. Review and respond to CA submittals. Perform discipline QA/QC review on assigned projects. Adhere to discipline budget and schedule. Required Skills Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP accreditation desirable. Additional certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged. Active participation in NSPE, SFPE, NFPA, or other related professional organizations is desirable. Familiarity with design/production and fire protection analysis software, with the ability to understand its capabilities and limitations. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software. Proficiency in discipline‑specific design software. Required Experience Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET‑accredited curriculum or a post‑graduate degree in the field is preferred. Must hold a fully licensed Fire Protection Engineer credential in at least one US state or jurisdiction. Four or more years of experience as a lead designer or Fire Protection Engineer on federal, state, municipal, healthcare, commercial, higher education, or similar projects, including experience with Design/Build and CM at Risk delivery methods. Working Conditions JMT offers a hybrid work schedule, requiring presence at a JMT office location at least three days per week or as needed. While primarily desk‑based, duties may include standing, walking, bending, and lifting minimal weight. The work environment is comfortable, well‑lit, and safe.
