About the Job This is a hybrid position at our corporate office in downtown Milwaukee. 3 days onsite, 2 days remote. To help guide this collaborative effort, we are seeking a Software Engineer III to join our team. This individual will support applications tied to calculations for Northwestern Mutual’s Risk Products and will partner closely with product teams, business partners, and other engineering teams to deliver reliable, scalable technical solutions. What You’ll Do Write, enhance, and maintain Java applications that support calculations for Northwestern Mutual’s Risk Products. Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, partnering with cross-functional teams to identify root cause and implement effective solutions. Recommend efficiencies to current development and continuous integration practices. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues that may arise during the development and deployment of software projects. Conduct thorough code evaluations to ensure compliance with established coding standards and best practices. Contribute to technical discussions and decision-making processes within the team. Work closely with product teams, business partners, and other engineering teams to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions. Communicate professionally and effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Develop an evolving understanding of system-wide architectural challenges and contribute to scalable engineering solutions. Mentor and provide guidance and support to junior technical team members. What You’ll Bring to the Role 2–4 years of experience working with modern engineering tools, languages, and practices. Required experience with: Java Spring Boot Node.js AWS, as the majority of the team’s work is performed in AWS Strong understanding of engineering principles, software design, and development best practices. Experience supporting production applications and resolving technical issues in a timely, effective manner. Strong communication skills with the ability to partner effectively with product teams, business partners, and other technology teams. Evolving analytical and critical thinking skills. Nice-to-have experience with: React Kubernetes SQL/relational databases CI/CD tools, including GitLab Skills You Have Business Application: Utilizes both business acumen and technology expertise to translate business requirements and capabilities into technical solutions. Applies technical knowledge of a product, platform, or application to align it with a particular line of business based on the organization’s technology needs and business goals. Cross-Functional Partnering & Planning: Facilitates collaboration, communication, coordination, and planning with individuals and teams from different functions within the organization and with different areas of expertise to achieve common goals. Root Cause Analysis & Decision Quality: Applies problem-solving methods to understand the fundamental reasons for faults and issues. Makes timely, data-driven decisions by understanding the probability of success, identifying customer risks, gathering business requirements, and developing value statements. Software Development: Creates and maintains applications, frameworks, and other software components by designing, programming, testing, and debugging. Writes and maintains source code throughout the software development life cycle and supports the automation and orchestration of disparate systems. Leverages TDD and BDD methodologies to ensure appropriate unit, integration, and end-to-end test coverage. Software Problem Solving: Conducts in-depth analysis of technology needs, issues, and roadblocks within assigned scope. Applies experience and expertise to use best practices, explore the “art of the possible,” and deliver effective and efficient solutions. Detects and removes existing and potential errors in software code or systems that may cause unexpected or incorrect behavior. Leverages common software tools, debuggers, and logical thinking to identify root cause and resolve issues. #LI - Hybrid Compensation Range: Pay Range - Start: $108,160.00 Pay Range - End: $162,240.00 Geographic Specific Pay Structure: Structure 110: $118,960.00 USD - $178,440.00 USD Structure 115: $124,400.00 USD - $186,600.00 USD We believe in fairness and transparency.
