Lead Peer Specialist (BHCC)

Overview The Lead Peer Specialist assists in overseeing Peer Specialist staff within the Behavioral Health Crisis Center (BHCC). With minimal supervision, provides a broad range of paraprofessional activities to participants engaged in Behavioral Health Crisis Services, including one-on-one recovery coaching, group skills training and education, and documentation of all client interactions in the electronic health record (EHR). Responsibilities and Performance Standards Lead Peer Specialist Duties Monitor and approve time and attendance for all Peer Specialists at the BHCC; track missed punches, lunch breaks, overtime hours, etc., to ensure accuracy. Assist in approving and processing timecards at the end of each pay period as needed. Oversee the hiring process for new peer specialists; serve as hiring manager and complete full workflow (posting, resume filtering, interviews, coordinating with HR on offers). Meet regularly with clinical supervisor to discuss workflow, updates, discrepancies, etc. Attend weekly leadership team meetings and report relevant updates. Assign and coordinate group coverage among staff to ensure adequate coverage. Audit peer documentation to ensure completion within designated timeframes. Direct Service Responsibilities Provide individual recovery coaching sessions using Motivational Interviewing techniques to support clients. Support and promote multiple pathways to recovery; assist with strength-based development of skills using lived experiences in recovery. Assist clients to identify and link to community resources that promote and support recovery; document interactions and progress in the EHR by the end of the shift on the same day of service. Comply with client confidentiality as specified by department policy. Complete treatment plan reviews and updates with the client, family members, significant others, and appropriate community agencies (with appropriate consents in place). Attend treatment team meetings and assist the client and team with identifying appropriate group activities based on assessed needs. Participate in development and updates of treatment plans with the client and treatment team. Utilize recovery coaching sessions to help clients identify individualized goals based on strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences; provide input based on client recovery status, interviews, and observations. Provide and conduct group skills training and education sessions; follow evidence-based curriculum requirements; provide emotional support, encouragement, and coaching; refer to clinician or team leader for services outside scope of Peer Specialist coaching. Monitor client progress toward treatment goals; contribute to maintaining a network of community contacts; support self-monitoring of goals and progress; communicate treatment progress to the treatment team. Maintain credentials and attend trainings as necessary; participate in community seminars/meetings if allowed by supervisor; maintain continuing education for Peer Certification (CPS-MH or CPS-AD/CARES); uphold ethical conduct and professional boundaries; stay informed by reading up-to-date articles and books. Document all client and client-related interactions in the EHR; complete required agency training on the EHR; submit documentation by close of business on the same day of service; obtain 2nd signatures from supervisor as directed. Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have a diagnosis of mental illness, addiction, or a dual diagnosis of mental illness and addictive disease, and a strong desire to identify themselves as a person with mental illness (current or former consumer of mental health services). Applicants must hold a GED or high school diploma and be at least 18 years of age; may be asked to provide a copy of this document. Applicants must have demonstrated experience with leadership, advocacy, or governance, and be well grounded in recovery (per CPS and CPS-AD/CARES guidelines). Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related social services field; commitment to working with adults with severe and persistent mental illness and willingness to provide treatment to clients in their homes and other community settings.
