School Nurse PRN

SCHOOL NURSE

The school nurse provides health services to students and staff, promotes a healthy school environment, and ensures compliance with state and federal health regulations. The nurse works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents, and community health professionals to support student well-being and academic achievement.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Assess and provide first aid and emergency care for students and staff.
• Administer medications and treatments per physician orders and district policies.
• Monitor students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, epilepsy).
• Maintain accurate health records and documentation of care provided.
• Conduct vision, hearing, and other health screenings as required by state guidelines.
• Maintain and update student immunization records per state regulations.
• Ensure compliance with communicable disease prevention and reporting requirements.
• Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
• Provide health education to students, staff, and parents on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
• Collaborate with teachers to integrate health-related topics into the curriculum.
• Promote wellness initiatives and health-related policies in the school community.
• Serve as a key responder in medical emergencies and assist in crisis intervention.
• Develop and train staff on emergency medical procedures (e.g., CPR, AED use, allergy response).
• Participate in school safety planning, including pandemic response and disaster preparedness.
• Work with parents, healthcare providers, and special education teams to support students with medical needs.
• Serve as a liaison between the school, public health agencies, and community healthcare resources.
• Provide referrals to outside medical professionals and social services when needed.

Education and/or Experience:

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state.
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• Previous experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing preferred.
• CPR and First Aid certification required.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Regular, dependable attendance on the job, travel between school sites if serving multiple campuses, the abilities to perform the identified tasks and work activities; and the ability to perform the following identified physical requirements:
