Department Description The ALBA Language Neurobiology laboratory, directed by Dr. Maria Luisa Gorno Tempini, studies how language is organized into brain networks across the lifespan. The lab is part of the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, a National Institute on Aging–designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center that translates research science into improved diagnosis and care for people with dementia and seeks treatments or prevention strategies. The team includes clinicians, scientists, and engineers with expertise in behavioral neurology, cognitive neuroscience, speech‑language pathology, neurodevelopment, and advanced neuroimaging. They study how language skills and brain regions are affected by neurological conditions and how they reorganize in response. Data Analyst positioning focuses on Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), a neurodegenerative syndrome that progressively impairs communication. The role aims to identify sensitive linguistic, cognitive, motor, or neuroimaging biomarkers of this syndrome and use multimodal imaging to predict longitudinal disease progression and track symptom change. Job Summary This is a contracted position that will end on 3/1/2027. The Database Administrator will work with behavioral and neuroimaging databases from the ALBA Lab and the Memory and Aging Center, acquiring skills and knowledge in research data analysis for dementia research, including automated speech analysis. The position involves maintaining databases, troubleshooting technical issues, and supporting projects of moderate scope within defined procedures and best‑practice standards. Responsibilities Apply professional database concepts to resolve basic procedural and technical issues under general supervision. Work on database‑related issues and moderate‑scope projects, considering business practice and technical factors and applying defined IT procedures. Interact with internal and external stakeholders. Design and program moderately sized databases with multiple tables and end‑user applications. Implement performance‑tuning techniques such as indexes and advanced SQL syntax. Maintain security and integrity controls for all data. Monitor policies, procedures, and standards related to database management. Assist with system enhancements to improve performance and reliability. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Minimum 1 year of related experience. Knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge of capacity planning and interface specifications. Knowledge of professional approaches and standards for managing unstructured data such as text and images. Demonstrated judgment and decision‑making skills, including problem identification, resolution, and performance improvement. Effective written and verbal communication abilities. Reasoning and problem‑solving skills, including the ability to develop original ideas. Interpersonal skills, service orientation, active listening, and organizational abilities. Ability to multi‑task and prioritize tasks. Basic programming skills in Bash, R, Python, or MATLAB. Knowledge of REDCap utilities. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training. Basic knowledge of automated speech‑analysis tools such as Whisper OpenAI and spaCy.
