The Phlebotomist is a vital member of the healthcare team, primarily responsible for the skilled and safe collection of blood samples from patients of all ages for diagnostic testing, transfusions, research, and blood donations. Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor or Director, you will play an essential role in receiving, verifying, and distributing critical patient specimens, executing fundamental clinical clerical functions, and partnering with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to promote diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes. A typical day for a Phlebotomist may include:

• Performing skilled and safe venipuncture and capillary punctures (finger sticks/heel sticks for infants) on diverse patient populations, determining the most appropriate method based on patient age, health, and test requirements.
• Adhering to strict infection control and safety guidelines, including proper hand hygiene, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and the safe disposal of all used sharps and biohazardous materials.
• Greeting and identifying patients using a minimum of two identifiers (e.g., name and date of birth) to ensure the correct procedure is performed on the correct individual.
• Clearly explaining blood collection procedures to patients to help them understand the process and alleviate any fears or concerns they may have.
• Demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and patience when interacting with patients, visitors, and other medical professionals.
• Accurately labeling all collected blood and non-blood specimens (such as urine or oral fluid samples) immediately following collection and verifying all patient information matches the test orders.
• Entering patient demographics, test orders, and collection information into laboratory information systems (LIS) or electronic health records (EHR) with meticulous detail.
• Maintaining an organized and sanitary work station, managing inventory, and assisting with ordering supplies as needed.
• Complying with all legal regulations and privacy rights, such as HIPAA, related to the handling of patient information and medical records.

To be considered for this Phlebotomist opportunity, you will have:

• A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program required.
• Prior experience in a fast-paced medical setting, such as a hospital or diagnostic laboratory, is highly desirable and preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification required.
• Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) from American Medical Technologists (AMT) required.
• Effective communication skills, with the ability to express details clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing.
• Strong technical acumen with the ability to easily comprehend and execute complex operational and safety instructions.
• Proven ability and willingness to maintain a strict level of data privacy, patient safety protocols, and confidentiality.
• Physical capability and comfort to work within an environment that involves handling biohazard specimens and meeting active physical demands.
• Strong professional judgment with the ability to make timely decisions consistent with departmental policies, goals, and regulatory rules.
• Scheduling requirements: Full-Time (FT) Night Shift, 37.5 hours per week, 11pm - 7am.
• Rotating weekend and holiday availability is required.
