Research Specialist – Crespo Department of Population Health and Pathobiology – Poultry Health and Management Laboratory Salary Range: $45,454 – $109,409 Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm; additional hours may be required. Full Time Equivalent: 1.00. Position Type: SHRA. Salary Grade: MH14. Valid NC Driver's License required. Responsibilities Support scientific research by assisting in experiments, procedures, and tests; manage data collection and sample handling with focus on research protocol compliance. Observe and measure subjects (animals, produce, environment), prepare study subjects for experimental procedures, collect samples, and gather accurate data. Prepare standard media, reagents, and chemical solutions used for testing and specimen processing. Perform basic molecular diagnostic assays, serologic and antigen detection assays, microbial/bacteria isolation steps, and prep tissue samples for histology. Analyze and interpret data, identify trends, troubleshoot experimental variances. Contribute to manuscripts by drafting technical methodologies. Maintain laboratory organization, sample inventories, freezer storage, and rigorous laboratory hygiene (glassware, incubators, water baths). Track and manage chemical and supply inventories; execute strategic procurement and formulate complex stock solutions. Enforce biohazard disposal protocols and laboratory safety requirements; manage equipment maintenance schedules, perform quality control audits. Maintain records of laboratory protocols, coordinate scheduling for students and visiting researchers. Assist with distance learning project leading to certification in poultry medicine, including translation between Spanish and English, selection of faculty to answer student questions, solving technical computer problems, and proactive tracking of student progress. Support graduate and undergraduate research projects and participate in student teaching and laboratory instruction. Partner with the research team and serve as liaison for the Clinical Studies Core and external laboratories to facilitate clinical trials. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the assignment or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Strong knowledge of laboratory and field settings with experience working independently or collaboratively while following established research protocols. Hands‑on experience handling poultry (chickens and turkeys). Experience drafting, writing, and submitting IACUC protocols, data analysis, and manuscript preparation for publication. Exceptional organizational and record‑keeping skills, strong written and verbal communication. Fully proficient in Spanish, enabling effective communication in bilingual research environments. Preferred Qualifications Laboratory & Field Expertise: Demonstrated experience in both laboratory and field settings, strictly following protocols. Animal Handling Skills: Extensive poultry handling experience. Protocol & Publication Management: Proven track record drafting protocols and writing manuscripts. Organization & Communication: Strong organizational and record‑keeping skills, excellent communication. Language Proficiency: Full proficiency in Spanish.
