Nurse Practitioners will serve as the primary care provider. They will manage all acute and chronic care needs for incarcerated individuals aged 18 and older. Responsibilities include performing physical examinations and diagnosing illnesses and conditions. They will prescribe a plan of corrective care within their specialty area of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician. Nurse Practitioners will order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests. They will identify and assess patient clinical problems and healthcare needs. Recording physical findings is essential for formulating a plan and prognosis. Discussion of cases with physicians and other health professionals is necessary to prepare comprehensive patient care plans. Nurse Practitioners will submit health care plans and individual patient goals for periodic review and evaluation by physicians. They may prescribe or recommend drugs and other forms of treatment such as physical therapy or inhalation therapy. Referrals to physicians for consultation or specialized health resources for treatment may be required. Designations may vary according to field of specialization.
