Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Construction Inspector I - II: Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management. Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees. Calculates payments due contractors for work completed. Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with various inspectors and other district/division project managers. Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications. Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades. Observes and inspects ongoing construction work. Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications. Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional Essential Duties for Construction Inspector II Include: Coordinates inspection schedules, traffic control needs, and access issues directly with district personnel. Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections. Minimum Qualifications: Construction Inspector I: Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: None Required Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. 404: Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate. Construction inspector II: Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: 1 year of experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. 404: Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate. Other Conditions: In the Construction Division's Structural Unit, may require certification as a Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Level II and/or Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI) awarded by the American Welding Society (AWS). Additional Competencies for Construction Inspector II Include: Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements Methods for reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with requirements Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Construction Inspector I - II: Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour. Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device Medium work: Lift up to 50 pounds at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 pounds Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling Walking - moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
