CHIP- Centralized Hospital Intake Program-Division of Hospitals and Diagnostic Treatment Centers

Job Description

The New York State Department of Health (DOH) is seeking to fill one Registered Nurse as a Hospital Complaint Intake Reviewer to support the complaint intake and review activities for the Centralized Hospital Intake Program (CHIP). The item will be a temporary services position located in DOH's Division of Hospitals and Diagnostic & Treatment Centers at 875 Central Avenue, Albany, NY.

General duties:

This individual is primarily responsible for working in a centralized complaint intake unit triaging hospital, ambulatory surgery center, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) & other clinical setting complaints, at the direction of the New York State Department of Health (DOH). Responsibilities include but are not limited to answering telephone calls and or written correspondence from patients, family representatives, advocates, and health care providers with complaints about care and services at these settings. Based on their clinical experience and knowledge obtained from working in health care facilities, the nurse will ask questions sufficient to understand the nature and details of the complaint and its likely impact on patient care and services. The information will be disseminated to the respective state and/or DOH regional office for investigation. This individual may also participate in other activities, including other patient protection activities, as directed. As a result of telephone calls and/or written complaints, communicate with the complainant providing him/her with an explanation of the complaint process and obtain specific details to completely and thoroughly document the actual complaint in a complaint tracking database.

1. Assesses cases for dissemination to the respective regional office. Works with the DOH and contract staff to facilitate routing and processing of cases.

2. Tracks, monitors and communicates status of assigned complaint investigations.

3. Responsible for all necessary case processing and maintenance of case specific files.

4. Participates in team meetings, goal setting and reporting activities as directed.

5. Daily use of Microsoft Suite of products (Word, Excel, Access) and Federal databases (ASPEN, ACTS).


6. Performs other such patient safety and protection activities as may be necessary.

Minimum qualifications:

1. New York State Registered Professional Nurse (RN).

2. Three (3) years of clinical experience in an acute care facility, required.

3. Two (2) years' experience performing, medical review, surveillance or monitoring activities at the facility level, recommended.

4. Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.

5. Recent clinical experience caring for patients in hospitals, dialysis centers, ambulatory surgery centers, psychiatric hospitals/clinics, and/or primary care clinics.


6. Strong communication, interview and interpersonal skills. *

7. Excellent telephone and written communication and assessment skills. *

8. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. *

9. Ability to relate effectively to patients/families, providers, and administrative personnel. *

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of state and federal regulatory requirements and experience handling sensitive confidential information.

2. Experience using Microsoft Office products such as Access, Word and Excel. *

Annual Salary: $ 104,000
