About the Facility - Houston VAMC
The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is a hospital affiliated with and operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. It is one of the department's largest hospitals, serving Harris County, Texas, and 27 surrounding counties. It is named for Michael E. DeBakey, a renowned surgeon and president of Baylor College of Medicine. The hospital is on a 118-acre campus on Old Spanish Trail and Almeda, just on the edge of the Texas Medical Center. It is accredited by JCAHO, and has 343 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 120-bed transitional care unit for long-term care.

Registered Nurse ER - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

• Must understand triage to make quick and accurate assessments about incoming Emergency Department patients, including physical, infectious and mental health conditions.
• Proficient with Emergency Severity Index.
• Obtains patient history and pertinent family history.
• Check for any allergies and current medications.
• Obtain height, weight, body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure.
• Establish, monitor, and recognize cardiac rhythms.
• Take blood samples, clean and bandage wounds, administer medications, and intravenous therapies.
• Possess knowledge of Infection Control practices and utilize appropriate practices as needed.
• Document plan of care and care given in the patient's medical record.
• Verify transcription of physician's orders.
• Carry out prescribed Physician's orders and document inpatient medical records.
• Communicate pertinent patient data to the Charge Nurse and/or Physician as appropriate.
• Re-assess patient's condition and revise plans-of-care based on problems that the Nurse identifies.
• Possess knowledge of actions and usual dosages of the most commonly used emergency drugs and their location on the crash cart.
• Assess and document patient responses to medications that have been administered.
• Instructs patients and their families regarding prescribed medications/therapies and surgical/diagnostic procedures that must be accomplished.
• Operates defibrillator, EKG machines and cardiac monitors, and other technical emergency equipment.
• Care for patients with Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, and mechanical ventilators.
• Participate in discharge planning.
• Can titrate medications.

Registered Nurse ER - QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a graduate from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate state-accredited agency and accredited by either the ACEN or CCNE.
• Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in ER/Major Trauma, with no more than a six-month gap working in that setting.
• Preferred to have CEN certification. Nurses with CCRN through AACN with ED experience will also be considered.
• Must have a current license in at least one state, territory, or commonwealth in the U.S. or the District of Columbia.
• Must have current certification in BLS/CPR by an American Heart Association Vendor. Must have ACLS certification.
