Job Summary Part‑time position, 24 hours per week. External applicants may receive a $3,750 sign‑on bonus upon a one‑year work commitment. This bonus is also available to previously employed applicants who have been absent for longer than 90 days. Responsibilities Prepares for surgical cases (40%) Obtain and prepare appropriate supplies, equipment, and instruments. Review surgeon’s preferences to determine required items. Establish and maintain a sterile field and present instruments to the operating team. Deliver appropriate instruments/supplies using proper sterile technique. Act as 2nd assistant to surgeon, performing duties related to draping and operative site exposure. Responsible for removal of all sharps and initials return card for verification. Hold extremities, assist with casting and splinting. Mix medications on the sterile field after verification by a registered nurse. Assist with positioning, fix specimens in formalin (annual competency required). Assist circulator with proper care and handling of surgical specimens. Wash and thaw grafts, hold a stapler while the surgeon fires it, operate skin stapler for wound approximation, assist with dislocation of joints (yearly competency required). Cut suture material as directed by and under the supervision of a surgeon. Apply ESU to clamps or forceps for hemostasis under direct supervision. Assist anesthesia (yearly competency), patient skin prep (yearly competency). Change out camera and robotic instruments during endoscopic procedures under direct supervision. Manipulate the uterus during robotic cases under direct supervision. Equipment and Supply Maintenance (40%) Assist in post‑procedure cleaning of the OR/equipment, return equipment/supplies to proper areas, and restock the room. Run dart/biologics for sterilizers (annual competency required). Report damaged equipment, mop floor between cases, and ensure cords are free from frays or cuts. Unit Operations (20%) Participate in unit operations to enhance department efficiency, communication, and quality care. Maintain all annual unit‑specific competencies, ACE, and PAR requirements. Mentor new associates and contribute to training and orientation. Limits of Scope Cannot inject or administer medications, dye, or blood products. Cannot set up IVs, desiccate tissue, or suture. Cannot tie suture, use or activate cautery, operate ESU, or perform invasive procedures. Cannot prep patient, access Pyxis for controlled substances, complete documentation for the legal medical record, manipulate or alter grafts, assist anesthesia with airway management or invasive lines, or mark surgical site. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED. BLS certification (American Heart Association). Completion of OhioHealth OR‑ST Fellowship or graduation from an accredited (CAAHEP) surgical technologist school, or equivalent military training, or 10+ years’ experience as a surgery technician. Demonstrated basic critical‑thinking skills on an introductory team. Ability to perform primary role independently. Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and communicate them with staff. Identification of actual or potential emergency situations and intervention safely with assistance or supervision. Completion of basic skills and competencies in 2‑3 service lines as outlined in the Surgery Skill Competency Checklist. Independent scrub of complex cases in 1‑2 assigned service line specialties. Work Hours Day shift, scheduled weekly hours: 24.
