Newborn Hearing Screen TechnicianThe Newborn Hearing Screen Technician is responsible for performing newborn hearing screenings on all infants prior to hospital discharge. This role ensures that screenings are conducted in accordance with Joint Committee on Infant Hearing guidelines, using AABR-certified equipment. The technician provides parents with accurate information, documents results, and collaborates with hospital staff to support continuity of care.Responsibilities:Patient CarePerform newborn hearing screenings on both ears using AABR-certified equipment.Conduct initial screenings and rescreens as required, following established protocols.Obtain informed consent from parents prior to screening.Provide parents with written results and answer general questions regarding the screening process.Ensure parents receive appropriate follow-up information and instructions if rescreening or referral is required.Administrative DutiesAccurately document screening results in the hospital electronic medical records (EMR) and/or state reporting portal.Maintain daily logs/census of all infants screened.File screening documentation in the infant's medical record.Perform clerical duties as assigned, including maintaining accurate and timely records.Track and communicate supply inventory needs to Supervisor.Clinical SupportVerify demographic information, including family history of hearing loss and pediatrician contact details.Properly maintain, clean, and use screening equipment according to company and hospital protocols.Restock and organize hearing screening supplies to ensure readiness for daily operations.Report operational issues, equipment malfunctions, or process concerns to Supervisor promptly.Collaboration and TeamworkEstablish and maintain positive working relationships with hospital staff, nurses, and physicians to ensure effective communication and workflow.Support colleagues by sharing information and assisting as needed to meet program needs.Work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, to meet hospital program requirements.Compliance and SafetyFollow Joint Committee on Infant Hearing standards and hospital policies for newborn screenings.Ensure all documentation meets regulatory and state reporting requirements.Adhere to infection control, HIPAA, and patient confidentiality standards.Participate in required training and annual competency evaluations.Maintain compliance with safety procedures in patient care and equipment handling.QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in healthcare or audiology preferred.Previous experience in a hospital or patient care setting preferred.Strong communication and interpersonal skills with parents and healthcare professionals.Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.RequirementsRequires National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management Certification (NCHAM) prior to first date of employment.Must successfully complete background check and drug screening (if applicable).Must provide documentation of required immunizations or proof of immunity, with accommodations available for medical or religious exemptions as required by law.
