Substation Engineer

Job Description

Insight Global is seeking a Substation Engineer for a top power and energy consulting client. The Substation Engineer will work in close coordination with a project managers and engineering managers to execute the engineering and design components of substation projects. Specific duties include:

Design substation physical layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding systems, and protection and control packages for transmission and distribution projects.

Projects up to 500kV for power transformers, circuit breakers, relay panels, SCADA integration, etc.

Type of projects include greenfield/brownfield substations utility grid modernization, P&C upgrades, transmission interconnection points, renewable energy interconnections, transmission line rebuilds, etc.

Prepare engineering deliverables including one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, relay panel layouts, equipment specifications, and construction drawing packages.

Coordinate with utility clients, project teams, and field personnel to support substation upgrades, expansions, and greenfield installations from design through commissioning.

Perform engineering calculations for grounding, cable sizing, equipment selection, and station service systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Skills and Requirements

BS degree in engineering, electrical preferred but could be civil or mechanical

EIT license or progress towards it

3+ years of experience in design/construction of high voltage substation or transmission projects

Ideal candidate comes from consulting background on utility projects MS degree in engineering

Technical Design experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity up to 500kV preferred, including at a minimum, conceptual knowledge of physical, electrical, civil, and structural design components, and knowledge of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), ANSI (American National Standards Institute), and other applicable design and equipment standards.

Design software: PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit or other high level analysis software
