This is an opportunity to work alongside experienced Body Technicians and Painters while developing the skills to build a long-term career in automotive and heavy-duty refinishing . GROW FROM THERE. $18–$30/HOUR Based On Experience Already know how to sand, feather-edge, mask, and prep? Great. Have some light body-work experience? Even better. Know your way around primer, filler, sanding blocks, and power sanders? WE WANT TO TALK. We’re looking for people at different skill levels — from someone building their career in the trade to an experienced prep technician who can step in and contribute immediately. LEARN MORE → DO MORE → EARN MORE → MOVE UP. YOUR MISSION: MAKE IT READY FOR PAINT. Before the painter picks up the spray gun, the surface needs to be right. That means: No missed edges. No bad masking. No waves. No pinholes. No contamination. No shortcuts. CLEAN. SMOOTH. STRAIGHT. READY. When you hand a job over to the painter, they should be able to look at it and say: “LET’S SPRAY IT.” What You’ll Do Sand and feather-edge repaired surfaces in preparation for primer and paint Tape and mask vehicles and equipment to protect trim, glass, adjacent panels, and components Perform light body work, including minor dent repair Apply and shape body filler when required Sand repaired and filled areas to achieve the proper surface Clean and degrease surfaces before primer and paint Apply primer and guide coats as required Use guide coats and visual inspection to identify remaining surface imperfections Correct prep issues before handing the job over to the painter Assist Painters with booth setup and material staging Assist with equipment and work-area cleanup Maintain sanding tools, blocks, power sanders, and prep equipment Communicate with Painters, Body Shop Technicians, and Shop Leads about job status and surface concerns Follow all applicable safety procedures and proper PPE requirements Keep prep areas and work bays clean, organized, and safe Properly handle dust, solvents, and other materials in accordance with company procedures and applicable regulations THE PAINT BOOTH CAN’T HIDE BAD PREP. In fact... PAINT USUALLY MAKES IT EASIER TO SEE. That tiny edge you missed? Visible. That pinhole in the filler? Visible. That sanding scratch? Visible. That masking line? Definitely visible. That’s why a strong Paint Prep Technician develops an eye for imperfections before they become paint problems. We want someone who learns to look across a panel and ask: IS IT STRAIGHT? IS IT SMOOTH? IS IT CLEAN? IS IT REALLY READY? That attention to detail is what separates average prep work from professional refinishing. KNOW YOUR SANDPAPER. Know What The Surface Is Telling You. Prep isn’t just grabbing a random piece of sandpaper and going to work. Around here, that can mean: Passenger Vehicles Light-Duty Trucks Commercial Vehicles Heavy-Duty Trucks Trailers Heavy Equipment Different sizes. Different surfaces. Different repairs. Different prep challenges. MORE VARIETY = MORE EXPERIENCE. If you’ve already prepped commercial trucks or heavy equipment, that experience is a big plus. What We’re Looking For YOU SHOULD BRING: Experience with sanding, taping, and masking in an auto body or paint… Familiarity with surface preparation for primer and paint Experience performing light body work, including minor dent and filler work Familiarity with different sandpaper grits and their applications Experience with sanding blocks, hand tools, and power sanding equipment Basic understanding of how prep quality affects the finished paint job Strong attention to detail Ability to follow established processes and instructions Willingness to learn from experienced Painters and Body Shop Technicians Ability to communicate when you identify a problem or surface concern Comfort working around paint, solvents, dust, and typical body-shop conditions Commitment to keeping your workspace clean and safe Valid Driver’s License You don’t need to know everything on day one. YOU DO NEED TO WANT TO GET BETTER. GOOD WORK STARTS WITH SAFE WORK. Prep work means exposure to dust, solvents, coatings, and other shop materials. We expect you to use the right protection and follow the right procedures. That includes: Dust Masks / Respiratory Protection Eye Protection Appropriate PPE Proper Ventilation Safe Solvent & Material Handling Dust & Workspace Control Proper Material Storage & Disposal You’ll be expected to follow company safety procedures and applicable OSHA and EPA requirements. DO IT CLEAN. DO IT RIGHT. DO IT SAFELY. THIS IS HANDS-ON WORK. You should be comfortable: Standing for extended periods Bending and kneeling Reaching across panels and equipment Performing repetitive sanding and taping motions Lifting and moving up to 50 lbs. as needed Wearing required dust and respiratory protection for extended periods Working in a professional shop environment with dust, fumes, and noise This is a trade.
