Staff Structural Substation Engineer Date: Jun 10, 2026 Locations: Overland Park, KS; Burlington, MA; Chicago, IL; Bloomington, MN Company: Black & Veatch Family of Companies The Opportunity As a Structural Substation Engineer, you will have the opportunity to apply advanced engineering techniques and analyses, expand your knowledge and skill set in your discipline, and begin to broaden your expertise into related functional areas. Key Responsibilities Develop and guide design standards, codes, and policies, providing technical direction to project teams. Apply B&V quality program standards to assigned tasks; support continuous improvement and change‑management efforts. Prepare complex engineering deliverables, perform research, and develop recommendations for equipment and material selection; manage budgets, schedules, and quality requirements. Coordinate with internal and external team members on moderately complex projects. Identify client interests and drivers, communicating them to the team and developing approaches that meet project objectives. Serve as a technical specialist in a practice area, offering consultation, guidance, and mentoring to lower‑level professionals. Assist with performance management processes, career planning, and learning and development. Manage small engineering resource groups and perform administrative duties such as approving timesheets and expense reports. Preferred Qualifications Valid PE license. Experience designing utility‑scale electrical substations. Structural design of substation steel structures and foundations. Basic structural steel and concrete experience using 3D analysis and design software such as RISA 3D or STAAD Pro. Foundation design experience using software such as L‑Pile or RISA Foundation. Proficiency with Excel or similar spreadsheets and MathCAD design templates. Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program. Minimum of five years of related work experience. Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements, including background checks, drug screening, and motor vehicle record searches. Certifications Most positions will require professional registration or licensure in the designated home office country, or active pursuit of such registration. Salary Plan / Job Grade Engineering (ENG) – Job Grade 016; Compensation range: $120,406.00–$201,080.00. Black & Veatch is an equal opportunity employer.
