General Description

The Petersburg Bureau of Police is seeking a professional Crime Analyst to support data-driven policing, violent crime reduction strategies, and grant reporting requirements. This position is supported by a multi-year grant award, providing stability and continuity while delivering critical analytical support to patrol operations, investigations, and command staff decision-making.

The Crime Analyst serves as the Bureau's subject-matter expert in crime analysis and GIS, operating with a high degree of professional independence. This role produces actionable analytical products that directly support officer deployment, investigative focus, and compliance with state and federal grant requirements.

  • Collect, review, analyze, and interpret crime data from RMS, CAD, and other law enforcement data sources to identify crime patterns, trends, hot spots, and repeat locations or offenders.
  • Develop and produce analytical products, including crime maps, charts, graphs, bulletins, dashboards, and written reports for patrol, investigations, command staff, and grant reporting.
  • Utilize GIS software to conduct spatial analysis and mapping in support of operational planning and investigative efforts.
  • Prepare routine and ad-hoc reports, including weekly, monthly, and quarterly crime summaries and grant-required performance metrics.
  • Provide analytical support to patrol and investigative units related to violent crime, firearms-related offenses, and targeted enforcement initiatives.
  • Present analytical findings and briefings to command staff and supervisors as needed.
  • Support grant-funded initiatives by tracking required data, outcomes, and performance indicators and assisting with statistical and narrative reporting.
  • Serve as the Bureau's crime analysis subject-matter expert and recommend analytical tools, methodologies, and training needs.
  • Maintain accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity of sensitive law enforcement data.
  • Coordinate as needed with regional, state, or federal partners for data sharing and analysis.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities, Requirements and Impacts

Data Responsibility:

Data Responsibility refers to information, knowledge, and conceptions obtained by observation, investigation, interpretation, visualization, and mental creation. Data are intangible and include numbers, words, symbols, ideas, concepts, and oral verbalizations.
  • Managing and analyzing crime and enforcement data used for operational decision-making and grant compliance.
  • Developing analytical datasets, maps, and reports to support crime reduction strategies.
  • Ensuring accuracy and consistency of data used in internal reports, audits, and grant submissions.
  • Translating complex data into clear, actionable information for sworn and civilian personnel.
Physical Demands:
The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately six (6) hours per day, standing approximately one (1) hour per day, and walking approximately one (1) hour per day. Frequently, the job requires repetitive motion. Occasionally, the job requires fine manipulation, grasping, reaching, and light lifting/carrying of objects weighing less than 15 pounds. On rare occasions, the job requires bending/stooping, pulling, pushing, heaving, and lifting objects weighing up to and over 45 pounds.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required in criminal justice, criminology, statistics, geographic information systems (GIS), data analytics, forensic science, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated training or experience in crime analysis, data analysis, or GIS applications.
  • Ability to analyze complex datasets and communicate findings effectively in written and visual formats.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working in a law enforcement or public safety environment.
  • Proficiency with GIS software and crime analysis tools.
  • Experience producing crime analysis reports, maps, and briefings for operational use.
  • Familiarity with grant-funded programs, performance metrics, or compliance reporting.
Professional Development

This position includes support for professional development, which may include:
  • Membership in the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) .
  • Attendance at crime analysis conferences and specialized training.
  • Ongoing professional training to maintain and enhance analytical and GIS skills.

Grant-Funded Position Notice

This position is funded through a three-year grant award . Continuation beyond the grant period is contingent upon funding availability, program needs, and City policy.
