Dietary Aide

A Dietary Aide in a hospital helps prepare, serve, and deliver meals to patients while ensuring each meal meets the patient's prescribed diet. They work closely with the nutrition services team to support patient care.

Job Description

• Prepare and assemble patient meal trays.
• Deliver meals to patients and collect used trays.
• Follow special diet orders (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, soft diets).
• Help patients select menu items when required.
• Maintain food quality and proper serving temperatures.
• Wash dishes and clean kitchen equipment.
• Sanitize food preparation and serving areas.
• Stock food and kitchen supplies.
• Follow food safety, sanitation, and infection-control procedures.
• Work with dietitians, cooks, and nursing staff to ensure accurate meal service.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (preferred by many employers).
• Good communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25–50 pounds.
• Knowledge of food safety practices.
• Previous food service experience is helpful but often not required; many hospitals provide on-the-job training.
